Feast of the Annunciation

On Wednesday 25 March we observed the Feast of the Annunciation as a College community.

Small services were held in classrooms and Homerooms across the Junior and Senior Schools, inviting students and staff to engage in solemn prayer and reflection.

One of the principal feasts of the Catholic church, the day celebrates the appearance of the Angel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary to announce the birth of Christ.

The Envious Curator

It has been a very productive fortnight in the Visual Arts world as we near the end of term and begin to resolve the creation of our compositions.

This week we are visiting Emma Havard's Year 8 Visual Arts class who have been studying a ceramics unit based on 'the macabre'. Students have been exploring the Day of the Dead, a commemorative holiday held annually in Mexico. Despite its name, the festival is actually a celebration of ancestors and a time to honour loved ones who have passed. It is believed that on this day, the souls of loved ones visit families in their homes. To welcome them, people make highly decorative clay skulls which are placed on an altar in the home, with a path of flowers leading from it to the front door.

Year 8 students have been working very hard to produce sculptures that reflect a distinct Mexican influence. They researched Mexican folk art and then sketched out the designs for their sculptures in their Visual Arts Process Diary. Adalia Hauler was acknowledged by her classmates as having the 'most amazing designs'.  We look forward to seeing the girls' completed works very soon!

Art Production 3 students have also been busy in the studio this term, creating an abundance of work, including drawings and paintings exploring the issues facing Australia in a post-colonial society.

Taking inspiration from the work of prominent Australian artist, Vernon Ah Kee, students Georgia Alomes (Year 12) and Lara Vincent (Year 11) composed works based on archival images from the Tindale Genealogical Collection in an attempt to restore dignity to the subjects in the photographs.

Important information for artists in the Senior School

If you are working digitally, you need to set your palette to the required dimensions (i.e. 1500mm in height x 840mm in width), with an output of 300 dpi. Alternatively, you can create your submission by hand and enter a high-quality scan of the composition.

Nailing Microsoft Teams

It's fantastic to see Leah Smith's Senior Drama students taking online learning in their stride (and not taking themselves too seriously in the process!).
