Year 9 Lightning Cup Sports Day with St Patrick's College

Last Wednesday our Year 9 classes participated in a Lightning Cup Sports Day with St Patrick’s College. Students participated or assisted with a sport, using game play, strategy and tactics that they have been exploring in HPE class.

The basketball team, competing at the Unigym, were faced with a tough challenge against a strong St Pats unit.  The team battled hard and played with good spirits right to the end, but were defeated 71 – 36.  Top scorers were Ruby Erin and Cleo Bortkiewicz.

Two games of netball were played in divisions at the Hobart Netball and Sports Centre.  With soccer cancelled due to the rain, the soccer team also travelled to Creek Road to participate in futsal and cheer on the netballers.

The division one group had a very strong start, leading 21 - 4 at half time.    The division two group were finding the going tough, with many students trying netball for the first time, and trailing 0 – 22 at half time.  With fantastic team spirit and sportsmanship, some division one players swapped teams to help out the division two team. The confidence of the players lifted and the game play steadily improved.  Some soccer players joined in with the division one team and surprised themselves with their netball ability.  The division one team finished with a 36 – 20 win and the division two team a 34 - 10 loss.

Cross Country Representative

Congratulations to Year 7 student Avalon Forbes who has just returned from the School Sport Australia National Cross Country Championships in Wollongong, competing in the Under 14 girls.  Avalon ran well in tough hot conditions, and the Tasmanian team won the Aggregate Improvement Trophy for the most improved State/Territory.

Swimming Representative

Year 8 student Olivia Nichols has been selected to represent Tasmania at the Australian State Teams Short Course Swimming Championships at the AIS in October.  Selection onto this team recognises Olivia’s outstanding performance over the recent short course season. Well done Olivia.

Australian Rules Achievement

It was an exciting night for Year 8, Ella Wagner on Monday at the STJFL Robert Beakley Best and Fairest Count.  Ella was the only female from the Glenorchy Football Club invited to the event, and placed 4th overall in the U14 Girls, only 4 votes behind the winner.  This is a fantastic achievement for Ella, and a testament to her athletic ability.

Secondary Hockey

This term Mount Carmel has Year 7/8 team competing in the Division 3A Secondary Hockey competition, on a Thursday afternoon at Tasmanian Hockey Centre.  It’s been great to see some new and returning players to hockey participating in this team, alongside the more experienced players.  In the opening games, the team has defeated St Marys 1-0 and Collegiate 6-0, and had a loss to Friends 4-0.

Thanks to Tina Stevens for coaching, and good luck to the team in their remaining matches.

Code of Conduct in Sport

Mount Carmel promotes good sportsmanship from both players and spectators at representative sport.

Here are some important reminders to all parents and spectators at Mount Carmel representative sport:

  • Make your presence and support positive.
  • Make opposition spectators feel welcome.
  • When visiting opposition schools and grounds respect the rules and guidelines regarding parking, seating and tidiness.
  • Refrain from giving advice to coaches, umpires or players.
  • Show support enthusiastically, yet positively.
  • Applaud skilful performances regardless of the school.
  • Refrain from any abusive or offensive behaviour towards umpires.

Now is a good time to reflect on our behaviour.  Please be respectful of each other.
