Year 4 News
Last fortnight, Year 4 students paid Melbourne Zoo a visit to learn more about tropical rainforest species, their features, habitats, food chains and life cycles.
Some of the things we learned were:
"Elephants know exactly how big they are so that they don’t hit their head or hurt themselves. The mother orangutan takes forever to teach their young to find food because they’re always moving!" Rosa
"Humans and orange-tans share 97% of the same DNA." Mitchell
"To make palm oil, companies chop down trees in rainforests." Kevin & Paras
"Orangutans are nearly extinct because the rainforest is being destroyed to plant palm oil." Takara & Lachlan
"I learnt that lemurs are herbivores and a type of cat." Asha
"Ring tailed lemurs are endangered from tree clearing and the destruction of their habitat.
We should stop buying products that have palm oil in them." Thomas
"Butterfly caterpillars eat green plants and fruit. Butterflies are eaten by birds." Lucia
"A lot of the food products we buy have palm oil in them but the packaging says ‘oil’ not ‘palm oil’." Ruby
