Our May Learning Story

The Senior Learning Community has begun their inquiry into developing healthy habits, focusing on diet and water consumption. Students will investigate a range of healthy habits over the term and become an expert in a particular area. In addition to this, students are designing a game that will teach their prep buddy a healthy habit. 

Our Senior Learning Community visits their Prep buddies every Thursday afternoon, where they participate in a range of activities, e.g. assisting their buddy with a task or sharing a story.

In Mathematics, students have been focusing on reading and interpreting maps. They have been introduced to grid reference systems and are beginning to interpret scales. They have been learning about decimals by investigating their use in real-life situations, e.g. money and time.

During writing sessions, students have been developing their ability to employ creative writing techniques through story writing. Students are writing about a hero's journey, a common template that mirrors stories of heroes and their adventures. A part of the writing process involves editing, adding punctuation, changing spelling and ensuring their work makes sense. Students are now editing to improve their craft to have improved language choices and more complex punctuation.

Active Friday continues to be a highlight for many students in the Senior Learning Community, with students participating in team-building activities. A cohort favourite is 'Survivor', a running game where students need to work together to achieve success.

Home reading continues in the Senior Learning Community, with students selecting texts from school or home to read and record on their reading log. Each log contains an individual reading goal that the student is working towards.
