Junior Report (1/2)
Wominjeka from the POD COMMUNITY - Jayden, Maria, Eda, Jordan
The Junior Learning Community have begun investigating the human body, including body systems and how to be healthy. Students are planning for a community breakfast which will involve making their breakfast, setting the table and washing their dishes. Throughout their investigation, students have learned about the importance of eating a nutritious breakfast to fuel the brain for learning. Part of the planning for the community breakfast will involve students ordering food from Coles Online and looking at the price of food to connect their understanding of money to a real-life situation.
In Reading, students have been learning how to make inferences, using pictures to gain deeper meaning from a text. Students have been using clues in images, e.g. facial expressions of characters, to infer how they might be feeling. Students have also learnt about non-fiction texts and their features, e.g. glossary, contents page and titles. Many of these texts have been about the human body linking well to their investigation.
In Writing, students are working towards creating a non-fiction text. They will be selecting a part of the body or system to write facts about. Handwriting has also been a specific focus, with students practising correct letter formation and sizing placed on a solid line.
Students continue to develop their ability to count forwards and backwards from any given starting point. Some of our students have moved on to skip counting by 2s, 10s, 5s, and 4s from a non-zero starting point. Explicit teaching of 2D shapes, including naming and describing by attributes. Students have used the terms edges and corners to describe a shape's properties, e.g. a square has four edges and four corners. They have taken their learning outdoors by locating shapes in the environment.
Home reading continues in the Junior Learning Community, with students selecting texts from school or home to read and record in their home reading diary. Each night adds up to a reading milestone in the book, celebrated with a certificate.
