Our May Learning Story

Our Prep Learning Community has continued to focus their learning on building routines, both learning and organisational. Every morning our Prep students enter the classroom, unpack their school bags and change their take-home reading folder. Students are also learning to 'get ready for learning' by setting their tables with the required needs for the task.

Our independent reading routine runs alongside our daily Literacy sessions. Each student has an 'Independent Reading Bag', which contains choice books selected by the student from the Classroom Library. During Literacy, students begin the session as a whole class before moving into small teacher-guided groupings. Students not in the teacher group work at a set task at their tables and partake in independent reading.

Prep students have continued to develop their number sense by investigating the numbers 1-10. They have represented these numbers with concrete materials, practised writing the digit and matched a collection of objects to an identified amount. Fluid maths groups have begun in the Prep Learning Community, with students from across the year level grouped by their next point of learning with a focus on number sense. There are six groups where students can experience a new group of peers, not necessarily from the Homeroom.

All group names are Australian animals; ask your child which group they are in!

Prep students are beginning their investigation into how to be a healthy human. They have looked at a healthy lunchbox and the importance of fueling our bodies with nutritious food and water. Students continue to participate in 'Active Friday' to experience a wide range of different physical activities. Yoga, PMP (Perceptual Motor Program), Dance, and Outdoor Sports were just some offered activities in May.

Home reading continues in the Prep Learning Community, with students selecting texts from school or home to read and record in their home reading diary. Each night adds up to a reading milestone in the book, celebrated with a certificate. How many nights has your child read?
