Chess Club

Week 4 of this school term saw the McCarthy Catholic College Chess Club take part in two regional chess competitions.

On Tuesday 17 May 2022, our representative players took part in the second round of the NSW Country Secondary Schools Knockout Chess Competition 2022, North West Region. The opposing team was Calrossy Anglican School, with both teams’ representative players engaged in a series of tense, evenly matched games. The MCC representative team won the day, winning three of the four matches. Well done to Kevin Bui, Samuel Drew, Thomas Errington and Tom Vuong. The victory ensures that the school will progress to the next round of the competition. Thanks to the Calrossy players and Ms Wilmott for coming to the school for the chess game.

On Friday 20 May 2022, the MCC chess club sent 14 players to Armidale to take part in the Interschool Chess Challenge, Secondary School Division. All the players showed significant improvement during the day. By the end of the competition, our school came second, behind Armidale Secondary College, and narrowly ahead of Farrer Memorial Agricultural High School. A special mention goes to Thomas Errington, who was the overall second placed player, as well as Tom Vuong, who was placed 5th.

The end of the school term, the school will be hosting teams from St Mary’s, Gunnedah, and Farrer Memorial Agricultural High School. During week 9, a return game against Calrossy Anglican School is being planned which will involve both the representative and social players.

The chess club meets every Friday, second break in the library. All players, especially beginners are welcome.

Good luck to our players for the rest of the term.
