Term 2 in the Library @ COHR

We began Term 2 commemorating Anzac Day.  Classes read stories about Anzac Day and completed activities associated with these books.  Our student’s in 5\6I led our school ceremony.   We are extremely proud of our students who show total respect at our Anzac Day ceremonies.

Preps read ‘My Grandad Marches on Anzac Day’ and learnt about ‘The Last Post”.

1\2’s read “This Old Thing’ and made a photo wreath from the Shrine of Remembrance education resources.

3\4’s read ‘Lofty’s Mission’, about pigeons used in the war and made a peace pigeon.

5\6’s read extracts about Indigenous & Torres Strait Islander soldiers and shared their discoveries with the class.

We moved onto Cyber Safety and read various stories about being safe when online.  Who are our 5 trusted adults when we are online that we can go to for help when we are at school, at home or friends houses. ‘Screen Time vs Green Time’ was explored so that we can work towards a healthy balance when we are online.  Our 3\4 students learnt how to compose, send and reply to emails and Scam emails were touched on.

Discussions took place in all lessons, with students sharing family rules when they are online.  These family rules are different for all but the rules are there for the safety of all children.

Our Cyber Safety lessons complimented the webinars the students participated in with Marty from Inform & Empower.

National Simultaneous Storytime on Wednesday 25th May will be held and our Preps and 5\6 buddies will work on an activity after reading the book - My Family Tree.

The Dewey Decimal System is being introduced or revisited in our 1 - 6 classes, looking at how and where books are located in our library and how we can locate them.  Our 3 - 6 students are making use of our library system Softlink - Oliver v5: Orbit, to search for books digitally to see if they are in or out and then find them on the correct shelf.

Books being read in the second half of Term 2!

Preps will be learning about Aaron Blabey and discovering not only his enjoyable ‘Pig the Pug’ books but his other entertaining books.  Our 1 - 6 classes will be exposed to a variety of Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander storytellers that have had stories published that will assist us to engage with aspects of literature that convey cultural and traditional elements.
