Fantastic 3/4

Year 3-4

Term 2 Week 6

What have we been up to?

Over the past few weeks, students have continued to read different information reports. They investigated key facts to identify the purpose of the text, analysed the language features and developed appropriate topic sentences.

In their writing, students wrote an information report on koalas. The students’ prior knowledge of koalas helped them to develop their information text, which was well-written across all of grade 3-4. Since then, we are learning about another Australian native, the platypus. We are investigating key information about the species, using a variety of formats, including scientific reports, guidebooks, newspaper articles, documentaries and reference texts.

In Maths, students have been using different multiplication strategies to multiply numbers 2, 3 and 5. Students played games and have used different activities to help with the multiplication of these numbers. Test your child at home and see how they are going :).

In Science, students identified and observed features of specimens and how to classify them. They grouped animals and plants according to their characteristics. Students played a game of “What am I?” to identify animals using their features.

In Inquiry, students have been investigating how climate influences the ecosystem. They analysed the vegetation and animals found in a tropical rainforest ecosystem, and mapped areas of tropical rainforest around the world. Students worked in groups to create an information poster, demonstrating their understanding.

What is coming up?

Reading/Writing - In the next few weeks, students will continue reading information reports and independently write an information report. We will also be introducing a new text type: Recount.

In Maths, students will continue learning different mental strategies to multiple numbers and division strategies.

In Science, students will be wondering about the world in relation to plants and animals. They will be sorting out the differences between plants and animals based on the characteristics of each one.

Finally, in Inquiry the students will be learning about the importance of the environment to animals and people and the ways in which they can be protected.
