National Simultaneous Story Time

Last week we celebrated National Simultaneous Story Time. Students from all around Australia shared the same book - Family Tree, by Josh Pyke and Ronojoy Ghosh.

Grade 1 students joined together with Miss Melissa

to hear the story and create our very own trees.

Grade 2 students were invited to attend Frankston Library to listen to the book.

On the way back to school we also found a special 'tree' to climb!

Andrew Chin

Last week we also had an amazing day on Thursday when Andrew Chin visited SFX.

In the morning, the Preps, 1s and 2s all gathered together for a special workshop,

where we sang and learnt some very funky moves!

Later in the day we joined together as a whole school to see each of the classes perform their own song, with special contributions from members of the school choir.

There was lots of laughter as Andrew shared stories

about how some of his songs came about.

It was so wonderful to all be together again for such a special event

and it was truly heart warming to see everyone so involved.

We also used this opportunity to work on our letter writing skills by writing thank you letters to Andrew. We then practised writing a sequence of events in order by constructing our very own recounts about the day, including special time connective words

such as 'first', 'next', then' and 'finally'.

Reconciliation Week Activities

This week is National Reconciliation Week and we were very lucky to have a special visit from two of the school's Fire Carriers, Rosy and Eric.

They guided us through a presentation and shared a very interesting book

called Our Home Our Hearbeat.

They did an excellent job presenting to the class and gathering ideas and suggestions from the 1/2s, that the students were then able to use when they completed their activity.

Maths

As we move our focus from addition to subtraction, we have discovered that they are actually closely related - like a family. Adding is the opposite of subtracting and when we know one - we can figure out lots of others things because of that.

For example, if we know that 6 + 4 = 10, then we can see  that 10 - 4 = 6.

We are learning lots of different strategies to subtract.

Some of them include counting back from a number, counting back to a number,

finding the difference between numbers and using addition facts in reverse!

Of course counting backwards is an important skill to help with these strategies,

so practising  on a regular basis at school and at home will be very helpful.
