Mr Cameron and Miss Judy

Maths

These last few weeks, students have studied time, where they timed themselves walking 1 kilometer and then used that data, along with finding a route to school using Google Earth, to calculate how long it would take to walk to school. They have begun to look at how to read a timetable and calculate travel times, especially paying attention to 12- and 24-hour time.

Writing

Writing has focussed on information reports, particularly on extreme weather events - flood, bushfire, cyclone and storm.

They have researched:

-What to do before, during and after an extreme weather event

- What you would need in a survival kit

- The causes and the impacts

- Interesting facts

Reading

This week's reading has focussed on using the words in a text to create a picture in our mind of what's happening in the story, recognising our imagination can change how we believe certain characters or things in a book look like.

The first story we read was called Drac and the Gremlin. Focussing just on the words, it reads like a science fiction story, Drac fighting the evil Gremlin, being transported to another world, when in fact the story is of children acting out this fantasy in their garden.

The students drew their own interpretations of the text, before seeing the illustrations that accompanied the text revealing the true story. Here are some of the images they created.

The rest of the week looked at classic Australian stories like "The Loaded Dog" from Henry Lawson and "Mulga Bill's Bicycle" from Banjo Paterson. It was great to see the artwork created, inspired by personal experiences and the language used in the stories.

Andrew Chinn Visit

Last week we were very fortunate and had Andrew Chinn come and visit the school. The students loved dancing and singing along with him.

John Paul College Production

Last week, the Year 6 students had the opportunity to watch the JPC production of "All Shook Up" which used Elvis Presley songs to tell a story. They were excited to see former SFX students Wilson and Gemma in the cast and thoroughly enjoyed the performance.

Cross Country

A small number of our students from Years 3 to 6 attended at Woodleigh School for the District Cross Country. All students performed well, doing their best to complete the 2 or 3km course (depending on their age group). Special mention to Kira who won her age group and went on to Hastings to compete in the Regional Championship.
