Grades 2-3

Inquiry Excursion: Bounce

On Thursday the Grade 2/3 teachers and students went to Bounce Heidelberg for a day of flips, climbing, obstacle courses, high ropes and slam dunk fun! Students have been working hard in class this term to participate in science experiments involving 'Motion' and connecting their understanding to how we use the micro-concepts of motion in everyday life. They have been exploring non-fiction texts about force, friction, movement, heat, springs and gravity in Reading, learning experiences to connect our Inquiry learning across subjects.

Literacy

In Reading this week, students have been paraphrasing information from non-fiction texts using SQ3R charts, and applying various strategies to put another's writing into their own words by restating the main ideas. In both Spanish and English this term, our purpose for writing is to 'Instruct'. We are following the writing process to create Procedural Texts. In Spanish Literacy this week, students had lots of fun reading and performing a role play about picking up food from the supermercado to make a class recipe. They first selected their ingredients and then created sentences with the structure: action verb + ingredient + adverb. Students used a texto instructivo checklist  for language and text features. They used this resource to self-reflect and keep their writing on track by answering: Mi texto instructivo está bien si tiene…

Ask your child about their role play and practise naming the following foods with your child at home!

Mathematics

Our Number and Algebra focus for Term 2 is Addition and Subtraction. In The Builders, students have been exploring written and mental strategies to solve two-four digit addition and subtraction. Students are learning about angles by coding pro-bots to race around a track and labeling the angles it has made. In a Mapping and Location rotation activity, students used Spanish directional vocabulary to beat their opponent when playing la batalla naval. They have been purchasing items from the class shop using money and adding up the total on a receipt. This is also a simple way to practise their addition and subtraction strategies at home by adding up the total cost of various items.

Thank you

Thank you so much to the families who have volunteered their time to help out in classrooms for the parent reading program this term. The students have enjoyed exhibiting their expanding reading skills (both decoding and comprehension) with you!

Camp

Thank you to all those who have submitted the permission form and deposit via Sentral due today: Friday 3rd June. The remaining balance is due Friday 15th July. Please remember to let your child's teacher know if your child is not coming to camp with us this year by selecting the red 'deny permission' option on the form. If you require any assistance regarding payment or have any enquiries about what to expect at camp, please contact the front office or your child's teachers.

Home Learning

This term we introduced a weekly homework task via seesaw. Students can either complete this task on seesaw or use paper/books at home and take a photo/video of their work to upload. The homework task will appear on seesaw every Monday and as a class, we will explain the expectations of each task and answer student questions. Home work will alternate between a Spanish and English task each week. We encourage students to continue using Raz Kids, Bug Club, take home readers, heart words and high frequency words spelling lists at home too.

Parent Teacher Interviews

Interviews  become available on Sentral last week. Thank you to the families who have already requested an interview time. Interviews will be running on Friday 17th from 8:00am - 5:00pm, Tuesday 21st from 3:45pm - 4:45pm and Wednesday 22nd from 3:45pm - 4:45pm. This is an opportunity for families to meet with both of your child's classroom teachers and discuss learning goals and achievements.
