PERFORMING ARTS CO-CURRICULAR PROGRAM
Showcase!
We are delighted to have been able to put on our first performance concerts since 2019 over the course of this week.
We began with a Lunchtime performance of our Legally Blonde songs on Tuesday, open to students from Years 8-10. It was just one of a string of presentations of the Legally Blonde musical, and we were so happy to be able to show the hard work of a range of students over a period of three years. We were especially delighted to have Gabrielle Go, a student who graduated from Year 12 last year, return to reprise her role of Vivienne.
We then gave a Matinee performance to our Year 7 students. There were performances by all ensembles - Gospel Choir, Marian College Choir, Production (Legally Blonde), Concert Band and Play Ukulele. They were joined by piano and violin students taking lessons with Creative Music in Schools. We ran this as a technical rehearsal, so Year 7 students were able to see how a concert is managed behind the scenes, as well as have the chance to hear from ensembles that they can join. It was a time for performers to find their stage feet, become familiar with the stage, lighting and sound system, and work with stage managers to rehearse a polished presentation as part of their performance.
This laid the ground work for the final performance of the semester the following evening, singing and playing for family and friends. The feeling of confidence, camaraderie and celebration among the students was wonderful to see, and playing for families was the highlight of the week.
We thank and congratulate all this week's performers. Not just for their performances over the course of the week but for their commitment and resilience. Many of our students kept connected during remote through ensemble rehearsal and social Meets. The Play Ukulele group was formed in remote learning during 2020, and about half of the Concert Band joined via remote. Students participated in a range of video performances, and our student leaders were instrumental in keeping morale high and building spirit this year when we were finally able to come together in rehearsals fully.
I'd like to acknowledge the work of student leaders, teachers, and Performing Arts staff. Cynthia Negash (Performing Arts/Legally Blonde), Student leaders - Caroline Iousa (Gospel Choir - United), Victoria Messina (Choir) Leanne Paul & Vivien Tran (Concert Band), and Lesia Makohon (Play Ukulele). Ensemble staff - David Ellis, Michael Cooper, Helenmarie Desmond, Rachel Andrews, and Wendy Smith and Belinda McGrath.
Performing Arts staff - Adele Profeta. We'd also like to acknowledge the School Leadership Team, for their support. Getting these performances up and running was very much a team effort, supported by many staff across different areas of the school.
We thank all the families over the last few years. Allowing instrumental practice when we were all locked down was truly appreciated. Part of the celebration of last night was seeing some parents again, and others for the first time face to face.
Finally, we invite students to join ensembles as we begin our new programs. Rehearsals commence from next week. Details are in the Notices, and information will be sent to students via DM early next week. Students can also come to rehearsals next week, or visit us in the Performing Arts office with any queries. All are welcome. Being part of an ensemble enables students to build relationships with students from a range of year levels, and to develop skills in presentation and communication while building personal self-confidence.
Families can also contact me at the College with any questions about all aspects of the program.
