Literacy, Maths, Mother's Day, Religion, Inquiry

Recently in Literacy, we continued to use craft as a consolidation of our sounds. We made lizards and lions for Ll, guitars and gumball machines for Gg, Umbrellas for Uu and Yo-yos for Yy. Ask your child how they made the mane for the lion.

This is how we write these letters using the Victorian Modern Cursive Script.

We are continuing to practise blending words especially using the CVC pattern (consonant- vowel- consonant pattern), such as tap, pot, pig, nut and peg.

In Writing, we have also been writing using sentence starters such as, Look at the…  See the… . I go to the… This reinforces some of the M100W words.

The genre we will be concentrating on this term is Procedure. This is a lot of fun as we do lots of cooking. We have already made Fairy Bread and Taco Boats. They were delicious, even those who had never tasted them before loved them.

Cooking is a great way to help independence. The children chopped all the ingredients, and then chose which toppings they wanted to add to their Taco Boats.

We looked at the format for a typical recipe.

Heading (Fairy Bread)

Sub headings (Ingredients and Method/Instructions).

The ingredients have bullet points and the instructions have a numbered list.

In Maths, we have been using Mathematic Attribute Blocks (MAB) to teach place value.

We call the small single blocks ‘units/ones’,  the long thin blocks longs/tens, the square flat blocks flats/100s and the big blocks are blocks/1000s.

We practised representing a number using the MAB blocks. They did really well.

We also learnt about odd and even numbers. We looked at the last number to see whether it was odd or even.

For Mother’s Day, we made beautiful portraits of our mums. We did this in different stages. First we made a pencil outline, then we traced over that in black texta.

We coloured this in pastel before finally using a paint wash as the background. It looked very effective.

We interviewed each child and wrote some information about our mum. We also made an amazing bouquet of flowers using our fingerprints.

In Religious Education, we read a story and watched a video about when Jesus appeared to his friends on the shore. After an unsuccessful fishing trip, the disciples were told by a man on the shore to throw their nets onto the other side of the boat. They thought this was strange as what difference would that make? But they did as they were told and they caught lots of fish. This was when they realised that the man on the shore was Jesus and he had risen from the dead as he had promised.

We also went to Mass recently. The gospel was about Jesus being ‘The Bread of Life. We made bread from paper to help us remember Jesus’ words.

Ealier this term we attended a Footy Clinic, where we learnt the basic principles of ‘handball’ and played some games.

In Inquiry, our theme for the term is ‘Sustainability’. We considered what we can do to help sustain the environment. We looked at water, paper, electricity, food scraps and rubbish.

Some examples the students came up with were closing the fridge door, using a lunch box instead of plastic or paper bags, turning off electrical appliances and lights, turning off taps and reusing towels.

We made a sustainability T-Chart where we sorted pictures by what would happen if we sustained or didn’t sustain things.

Kind Regards
