Year 8 Humanities
Up-Cyclying Market Day
Preparation:
Since the beginning of term 1 we were told to create products while upcycling old items, we could even consider ourselves as entrepreneurs. Weeks before the stall day, everyone was working tirelessly trying to think of ideas, prepare their products, make posters and put them up around the school. It was such a memorable and thrilling experience and we were all so excited to show and sell our products. Some of the challenges we faced were trying to think of ideas for products, trying to create enough of the products before the stall day, coming up with prices for our products, and trying to make posters and put them up around the school.
On the Day:
Everyone in Year 8 was all ready for the rush of the crowd that was yet to come at lunch. We were setting up all of our separate stalls and putting up our posters on the front of our table. Everyone had all their items lined up and ready to be sold. We were all getting excited and hyped up. When the lunch bell rang everyone started coming around and looking at everyone’s items choosing which one they wanted. We decided to give away free lollies to go with our product as an incentive to anyone who bought our product. With our stall that my friends and I had set up, we all decided to take turns to go around the market so we could buy something as well. There were Candle holders, Jewellery, Pocket bags, Pen holders, File holders, Study desk organisers, Mosquito traps, Games that you could play to win an item, storage containers, Plants in cans and lots more.
After the stall day:
All the Year 8 students got to vote for a charity they wanted to donate to with the money that we collected. Some of the charities included, RSPCA, Cancer Council, Mirabel, The McGrath Foundation etc. The charity that got the most votes and which our money was donated to was the Cancer Council, which won by 70%. We managed to donate over $300, which surprised us all! Overall, this was a fun experience for us Year 8 students to have a learning experience about Business and Marketing in order to prepare us for the future.

Year 8 Medieval Day
Medieval Day was filled with many activities that got everybody to participate and learn about medieval times.
In the ‘Games and Entertainment’ session, we learnt that the villagers had to sacrifice many things to make a living. In winter time, they were given time to play games and have fun so they would still work for the Chief of the village.
The ‘Troubadours’ workshop was about juggling, balance and diablo sticks. We learned how entertainers performed, how they were utilised to help their social status and how they earnt money with their skills.
‘Punishment and crime’ was a topic that sparked everybody’s interest, we were shown how different punishments were served and earned.
Another popular activity was the ‘The Tournament’, students were shown how to use swords and shields. Everyone wanted to participate just so they could hit the instructor.
Lastly, in ‘Medieval Japan’, we were positioned to be in the line of hierarchy and learn what each person’s role was and how it affected the royal line.
Overall, it was a great day to learn about History through listening and participating in various activities.

Medieval Day Incursion
Glen Eira College celebrated Medieval Day on 29th April 2022. Medieval day was held to learn more about medieval culture (religion, games, punishments, entertainments, etc.).Many of the students dressed up in medieval themed costumes like a doctor, King and even some students dressed as Vikings. We did a lot of activities on Medieval day such as:
Medieval Migration to Japan
The medieval people migrated to many countries and tried to conquer them. We learnt about a Japanese Dynasty and learned about how they ruled, what they used for fighting, the role of the Emperor and ministers as well as the Japanese culture.
Medieval Entertainment
During the medieval times there were people who entertained the public. One of the many types of entertainment was juggling which we learnt how to do in this activity. Juggling is good exercise, makes you smarter and is good for eye coordination.
Medieval Games
In medieval times there were a lot of games that were played. We also played some of the games at school that were played in the medieval period. We played a game similar to tug of war but we had to stand on a small wooden plank. Then we had to pull the rope and whoever stays in the wooden plank for the longest without falling off is the winner. We also played a little game of cat and the mouse and many other medieval games.
Medieval Crimes and Punishment
The medieval people believed heavily in God so if someone had been killed there were only 3 witnesses. The murderer, the person who got murdered and God. One of the punishments was to heat a piece of metal and whoever they think might have done the crime will hold the piece of metal. If the wound starts healing after a few days then that is a signal from God that the person is innocent. But if their wound does not heal after a few days then they are considered a criminal. There are a lot of different punishments for different crimes.
Medieval Fights
We learnt how to fight with a wooden sword and what tactics would be best for fighting. We also learnt how the medieval people would be trained to fight and what they wear to protect themselves in battles. The fun part was that we could actually fight with the teacher.
Overall, Medieval day was very fun and very interesting to learn about Medieval culture.
