From the Principal

Open Day / Night

How wonderful to have our prospective families join us for a range of Open day / Night tours and activities.

The contribution by our students in every single area of the college was outstanding.  It will come as no surprise to you that the feedback from our visitors in regards to our students was extremely positive. It was a wonderful team effort - our staff, students and parents were passionate and committed in showing the community what a wonderful school we have here at Glen Eira College.  Special thanks to Year 7 students Gaby Duieb and Qinger Wu and school captains Darcy Messenger and Yashasvi Agrawal who spoke so beautifully at the formal presentation.

Subject areas really were on show with lots of opportunities for our visitors to participate in a wide range of learning activities. Our staff worked incredibly hard to ensure parents were well informed and that there were plenty of activities for the primary school students to get involved in.  I am very proud of the huge number of students who participated in the evening, talking to prospective parents and students so eloquently – fantastic ambassadors each and every one.

ANZAC Day Commemorations

I am very grateful to our school captains, Darcy Messenger and Yashasvi Agrawal who represented the College at the City of Glen Eira ANZAC Day Commemorations laying a wreath.  The assembly at school was truly fitting. Thank you to Aaron Petersen for coordinating the assembly and to our school captains and vice captains for their participation.

Number 2: Supporting Students with Maths Learning Difficulties and Dyscalculia

Tuesday 31st May, 5.30pm - 6.30pm

GEC Performing Arts Centre

We are delighted to have been recommended by parents to engage Dr Judi Humberstone (PhD) Melbourne University to run a practical information session to learn more about supporting students with maths learning difficulties including Dyscalculia.

There is no cost to parents. Book your tickets here: https://www.trybooking.com/BZKVN

Dr Humberstone is a former Victorian Department of Education school principal with 23 years experience of teaching maths at the secondary level. She is a registered psychologist and was jointly responsible for setting up the Dyscalculia component of the Psychology Clinic at the University of Melbourne. Dr Humberstone also provides advice to schools and parents on how best to help students with maths learning difficulties and Dyscalculia and presents at national and international meetings.

Finally

Our wonderful library technician, Megan Gatt, is retiring.  Megan has made an outstanding contribution to GEC and to the library in particular.  She is passionate about ensuring all students are included in all aspects of college life. She has provided many opportunities for students in the library and is highly respected and valued by students and staff alike.  We will really miss her and wish her all the best.

I am delighted to welcome the following new staff this term

  • Taif Al-Furaiji – PSD
  • Nicholas Cowling - PSD

It was wonderful to have our Year 10 students go to The Summit Camp – their first chance for a camp since Year 7.  Our student leaders also participated in a camp with the purpose of developing their leadership skills. I look forward to seeing their leadership at the college continue to prosper.

NAPLAN – well done to all Year 7 and 9 students who have completed the NAPLAN testing – online for the first time.

Students will be participating in the Students Attitudes to Schools Survey over the coming weeks. This provides us with important information so we can continue to live our school values of learn, grow and connect.

Capital Works - the project team are continuing to work in the design phase of the project which is to provide 10 additional classroom spaces to accommodate an increased student capacity.

The architects continue to consult with key staff – Arts, Technology, Science and General Teaching.

We are currently investigating where to move the bike racks that are adjacent to The Arts / Technology block and further increase capacity for bikes and scooters.  We would like to have the space created in the next holidays.

If you have any wonderings, concerns or feedback, please do not hesitate to call me at the school to talk or arrange a time to meet.
