NAPLAN, Education Week & More

NAPLAN

Congratulations to all our Year 3 and 5 students who completed their NAPLAN assessment last week. Students have completed assessments in reading, writing, spelling, grammar and punctuation and numeracy over the past week. NAPLAN results form one part of our assessment schedule, but the results are viewed alongside other types of assessments completed by the students throughout the year. Individual student and school results from NAPLAN are usually available in early Term Three. Once results are available, parents will receive their child’s individual NAPLAN report.

Student Representative Council  (SRC)

The Brigidine Asylum Seekers Project (BASP) was established in 2001. It is a Melbourne-based initiative of the Brigidine Sisters whose motto is Strength and Kindness. The Brigidine Sisters have been engaged in education and social justice in Victoria since 1886.

Our SRC have decided that this project is something that they would like our school to support for this year. The research completed on which THE Resilience Project is based on, that all our students are involved in, is that the more positive emotion you experience the more resilient you will be. So, the positive emotion from giving and being grateful for what we have is our reason for supporting the Brigidine Asylum Seekers Project.

You will be hearing more about this from your children and us on how you can help with this special initiative in the very near future.

I became aware of the project after watching Compass on the ABC, if anyone is interested in finding out more, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Election Day BBQ and Cake Stall

Yes, only 2 more sleeps to the renowned Election Day BBQ and Cake Stall at Syndal South Primary School. We are hoping that you have been busy in the kitchen with the mixing bowls out and the ovens on preparing to once again support the school by supplying homemade cakes, slices and biscuits to sell at the stall. If we could have all items delivered to the school on Friday, that would be greatly appreciated.

There are still a few spots available to help out on the stalls.  If you could spare some time please sign up below and we will see you on Saturday.

Education Week

Celebrating Education Week on site is back!

On Wednesday the 25th of May at 4.30 pm families are invited back to school to celebrate the wonderful writing that has been produced by our young writers across the school. The evening will conclude at 6.00 pm.

Each class will be showcasing their latest published writing based on “To Persuade”. Each class will also be explaining the writing process they went through from generating ideas to the final published piece. There will other pieces of writing on display as well, also you will be able to see your child’s Writers Notebook.

Times for the writing presentations:

4.30 pm           Enjoy viewing the ‘Yard Art’ display
4.45 pm           Foundation
5.00 pm           Year 1 and Year 2
5.15 pm           Year 3 and Year 4
5.30 pm           Year 5 and Year 6

As part of the display, we would love it if each family could write a piece together. We are sending home a suitcase for you to do your writing within.  The piece needs to somehow be related to the suitcase. It could be:

  • A recount of your family’s favourite holiday
  • A wish of somewhere you want to visit with the reasons why
  • An entertaining story that happened on your family holiday
  • The children writing to persuade their parents to take them to a certain place
  • An imaginary story of something that might have happened on a holiday
  • An imaginary place/adventure that your family could go on.

We ask that you work on it together with all members of the family.  Only one story needs to be written. If you have more than one child, we will take a photocopy of the families writing so it can be displayed in each child’s classroom. Please feel free to decorate your suitcase in any way you like.

The suitcase is coming home tomorrow night – Friday 20th and we ask that you return it to your child’s classroom teacher on Monday 23rd May so that they can be displayed for Wednesday night.

Thank you in advance for helping us to celebrate Education Week at Syndal South.
