Reading/Writing

We are focusing on revisiting Reading routines and practicing the things

that good readers do. We are trying to support students with selecting their ‘Just Right’ books. Your child will continue to choose 5 Just Right books on a Monday and we ask that your child spends some time each night reading a book or two with you. We will be focusing on being an ‘Independent Reader’. An Independent reader is somebody who has a go at reading the tricky words by using a variety of reading strategies. This term we will be unpacking and teaching a range of reading strategies, such as finding the pattern, making the first sound and saying all the sounds and reading the word. We will also model the ‘does this look right, sound right, make sense?’ reading strategy to help our readers make sense of what they are reading. Your child will engage in daily rhymes and chants that are engaging and will help to develop their confidence. They will begin to start reading with another student which brings our students a sense of shared joy of reading. We look forward to listening to your child read, and providing guidance on strategies that will help them develop as a reader. We will add little notes and goals in their diary from time to time to help support nightly reading at home.

We have revisited Writing routines such as rehearsing our message before writing. Our students have been encouraged to write about things that they know and care about. Our students have been thinking about their message, then drawing a detailed picture and having a go at writing the sounds they hear in their message. We have students show brave writing attempts by having a go at writing the first letter that they hear in a word and having a go at writing the other letters. Our students proudly display their work in the corridor. We encourage our students to bring any wonderful treasures and artefacts from home to school to provide them with exciting writing ideas! We are impressed with the level of enthusiasm our students have been displaying towards their writing. We look forward to our Preps showcasing their amazing writing pieces with you.
