Grade 5/6

Reading and Writing

This term Year 5/6 students have been working on Procedural texts. They are learning very quickly that while some procedures, such as using chopsticks, are easy to do yourself, when you have to teach a partner, it is much more complicated. Explaining how to tie your shoe laces by voice instructions only was a challenge the students enjoyed participating in. Cooking recipes are also a great example of the importance of following the steps to achieve success. Here are some examples of recipe procedures and shoe laces steps that students completed. We are still reading Escape From Mr Lemoncello's Library which the students are engaged in and enjoying the challenges that are being presented during the story.

Maths

In Maths  this term students have been working on consolidating their multiplication and division skills. We have focused on a few different strategies for multiplication including the Lattice Method and the Box Method. We also have revised traditional Algorithm strategy. Students have practised each method and found which strategy works best for them. As part of revising these skills, students undertook an escape room challenge where in pairs they had to solve different types of multiplication problems to discover the code that would allow them to move onto the next stage and finally complete their escape. This activity was very much enjoyed by the students. Division has also been worked on when focusing on inverse operations of multiplication equations.

Inquiry

This term, we will be working on the topic of electricity and energy. We have discussed what we currently know and understand about electricity and energy and what we would like to find out over the course of the term. This will include students creating a power circuit that will enable a light bulb to come on when all connected. We will also look at different forms of energy resources including the use of wind and water power sources.
