Acting Principal’s Report

Brent Houghton

How things change very quickly at the moment. Just two weeks ago in my last newsletter report, I indicated that we were looking forward to having our Year 7 to 10  students return, albeit with some changes to our normal practices to reflect COVID-19. Two weeks later, it seems as if our students have never been away, and the school has been a hive of activity. Later in this newsletter you can read about a new Year 7 Courtyard adjacent to the Yarra River. In Term 3 the area adjacent to the Year 7 Courtyard will continue to be developed for the use of all students. In this newsletter you can also read about the sustainability team’s very deserving award as the Resource Smart School in Community Leadership. We are planning for further changes to our processes for Term 3. We will await further advice from the Department of Education and Training and publish these changes via Compass newsfeed.

The end of this term is a chance to reflect on the achievements over the past three months, and try to capture those aspects of remote learning that have worked, and might continue to work in our face-to-face environment. The Victorian government has the same idea. We are looking to put together a MGC response to the Education State: Lessons from Remote and Flexible Learning initiative. We would love to hear the perspective of parents and students about your view on the positives and challenges of remote learning, and what we could potentially continue with in Term 3 and beyond. If you would like to contribute, please send me an email by next Wednesday 24th June. I will then use this feedback to inform a short MGC response by the due date of Tuesday 30th June.

We hope that the numbers of new transmissions of COVID-19 remain low, and that MGC does not have to return to remote learning at any time during the rest of this year. As I’ve said a number of times, the most important way that we can increase the likelihood of success with this is to ensure that no-one attends school with any cold or flu-like symptoms.
