Staff Profile

Hello!

You can call me Amy.

I joined Scoresby Secondary College at the end of Term 3 in 2019 as the new School Chaplain.  I grew up in Gippsland in a small town called Morwell and am very lucky to come from a very large, loving and close family (with 35 cousins!).  I am proud of my heritage which is a mix of Cambodian and British, and I have learnt a lot about cultures and families.

After Year 12, I moved to Melbourne city for 13 years, and now live locally with my husband.  I studied Architecture at Melbourne Uni and Theology at Ridley College.  Strangely, while at university, I found that I was enjoying my volunteer work more than my studies.  I was always volunteering for youth work, mainly through my church and other Christian groups.  Each year I ran youth camps, youth outreach programs over Schoolies / New Year’s periods. I co-led my church’s youth ministry and Victorian conferences attended by hundreds of teenagers and leaders. This led me to thinking that maybe I could look at a career that involved working with young people. Eventually I learnt about my new dream job – School Chaplaincy!

I decided to return to university and completed studies in Counselling, Creative / Expressive Therapies and Sand Play Therapy.  Creative expression is useful for anyone – especially young people.  This was amazing for me to discover because at heart, I am a creative person!  In fact, I am currently rediscovering how fun it is to draw and have been teaching myself how to paint and sketch with watercolour.  My other random passions include listening to progressive and alternative rock, playing classical piano, crocheting, rock climbing, stationery, plants, everything about Japan and the colours peach and fluoro orange.

Every day I am grateful for the work I get to do through being a School Chaplain. It is inspiring to see the creativity, hope and bravery that teenagers demonstrate.  I find it humbling to be invited into their world and thought processes. It is a joy to be an encouraging cheerleader to them as they learn about themselves and their place and purpose in the world.  I believe that everyone has something great to offer and that it is never too late to try something new.
