Year 12 Investigating Science

Year 12 have returned to the Science labs over the past week to begin work on a task to test product claims. They have set up a series of experiments including one which will determine if antibacterial soap is more effective than regular bar soap – a pertinent investigation at a time of increased awareness and importance of hand hygiene.

The boys plated E. coli bacteria on nutrient agar and have applied antibacterial hand wash to one set of plates, and regular bar soap to a second set. They also have a control plate to make their investigation a fair test in order to compare their results.

The boys will now await results as their plates incubate for a few days.

Year 7B

Year 7 returned to the Science labs today to investigate the scientific concept of expansion. During online learning, they studied real-world applications of preventing damage to structures like bridges and railway tracks caused by expansion. The boys were able to observe this concept using the ball and hoop experiment, proving that heat causes metal objects to expand.

During the same lesson, the boys were able to observe the wide range of animal specimens we have at the College. At the end of last term, Year 7 studied classification and unfortunately they were not able to see these specimens as would normally be the case. The boys enjoyed looking at various preserved animals including arthropods, reptiles and mammals.
