Spotlight on Learning - Rooms 3 and 4

Dream Big Excursion Day

Co-written by Room 3 and 4 students with Mrs. Volaris and Mrs. Jones

On Wednesday 24th of May, Rooms 3 and 4 went on an excursion to the Adelaide Zoo and the Dunstan Playhouse.

First, we got onto a bus, and Peter, the bus driver, took us to the Adelaide Zoo. We got off the bus and saw lots of bats up in the trees. We also saw two Kookaburras sitting on a post. We walked to the Plane Tree Centre, where we put our bags down. Julie, the Zoo Educator, read us a story about reptiles called ‘The Lizard Club.’ After the story, Julie showed us a sea turtle’s shell that we got to touch and feel. Then we went through a secret passageway into the zoo. We walked through the Nature Playground to the Reptile House.

In the Reptile House, we saw lots of different reptiles, like snakes, frogs, a female Komodo dragon, turtles, and lizards. When we finished walking through the Reptile House, Julie showed us the male Komodo dragon. He was HUGE! We thought that he was pretending to be a rock. There was some white paint on the bottom of the glass enclosure. Julie told us this white paint protects us and other little children from being eaten because the Komodo dragon has a powerful bite with germy saliva. YUCK!

“The reptiles were very cool,” - Alice.

“I liked the big turtles,” - Joshua.

“I liked the reptiles,” - Emma.

“I liked going through the Nature Playground,” - Ella.

“I liked looking at the male Komodo dragon,” - Charlotte.

Next, Julie took us for a special treat to see the fairy penguins. They were very cute and fluffy.

After that, we went back and got our bags and walked back to Peter, who was waiting at the bus. Then, Peter drove us to the Dunstan Playhouse.

After we got off the bus, we walked to a grassed area in front of the river, and we ate our lunch on the steps. After we ate our lunch, we went into the Dunstan Playhouse, where we watched a play about ‘Possum Magic.’

“The play was fun,” - Jasmin.

“It was funny,” - Hayley.

“It was loud,” - Layla.

“The snake was scary,” - Seanna.

“It was really cool,” - Mason.

“I liked watching it because the baby possum was invisible,” - Mark.

When the play was finished, we found Peter on the bus, and he drove us back to school. We felt happy because it was a fun day, but we were exhausted!
