Personal and Social Capability

CURRICULUM FOCUS

This week we are learning how to Identify when we are feeling negatively, or in a ‘bad mood’ and identify different strategies to help us to feel more positive.

VOCABULARY

Negative feelings:  While some feelings may be viewed negatively as they feel uncomfortable, it is important to understand that our feelings provide us with important information.  Fear helps us protect ourselves and find safety.  Anger helps us protect ourselves and our boundaries.

Strategies:  Feelings are not bad in and of themselves but the choices we make in response to our feelings can either help us look after ourselves and others or else do the opposite.  Strategies for managing feelings must help us do the former.

ACTIVITIES YOU CAN DO AT HOME TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD'S LEARNING

Talk with your child about a moment when uncomfortable feelings helped you make an important decision.  Perhaps you decided against living in a certain place or decided against staying in a job that wasn’t meeting your needs.  Talk about how those feelings helped you improve your situation and the importance of listening to our feelings.
