Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

We've been learning about how to reduce our footprint by reducing, reusing and recycling the resources we use.

1/2A is in the middle of trying to recycle newspaper, plain paper, and cardboard. We've shredded the different materials, soaked it over the weekend, then spread it out to dry and hopefully turn into new recycled materials (although we may have left a bit too much water in so it's taking longer than we'd hoped). We made predictions about what the new materials would look or feel like, using words like thick or thin, shiny or dull, smooth or rough, and colourful or plain.

1/2B is in the middle of seeing how different materials will break down in the soil. We've buried a banana skin, a tissue, a chip packet and a sauce packet. Now we're waiting to see what will happen over the next few weeks. We have discussed the impact of our environmental footprint and looked for ways to make our footprint smaller by reducing what we use, recyling what we can and reuse things as much as possible.

Readers' Theatre

Good readers read with fluency and expression. As part of our literacy block, we've been practising reading fluently with a partner. To make this even more exciting, we've started practising and performing some Readers' Theatre pieces where we read from a script in a small group. Some have felt nervous, some have felt excited, but we've had lots of fun practising and performing in front of others.

Mixed Up Fairy Tales

While we've been learning about fairy tales, we've decided to mix things up a bit. We've listened to stories like Little Red Riding Hood and Goldilocks and the Three Bears... but now we're changing some things. Have a look at some of our plans for stories with characters like "Little Red and Yellow Riding Hood (the surf lifesaver)", "Little Blue Mermaid", and "Little Red Mario Cap". We'll have the finished stories to share with you for next week's newsletter.

1/2B have looked at how the fairytales could be changed if the setting was different, like Red Riding Hood in the city. We have also had fun with the story if Red Riding Hood had of called the police for help.
