Around the Campuses

Legal Professionals Visit

On Thursday 18 May, a panel of legal professionals presented to over 80 Year 10, 11 and 12 Legal Studies students on their jobs and experiences in the law, including the challenges they have faced, the opportunities that they have had, and what they like most (and least) about their roles in the law. The panel was made up of Magistrate Urfa Masood (the first female Muslim judicial officer in Victoria), barrister Ffyona Livingstone Clark, solicitor Jovan Balac (who is also a past VUSC student), police prosecutor Sergeant Erin Dennis, legal aid lawyer Cassandra Generoso, and past VUSC student Timothy Ly (who is currently studying law at Monash University). After the panel presentation and student questions, the panel members and students had more informal discussions over afternoon tea.

The students really enjoyed this event and learned a lot from it, with a number of students saying how inspired they felt as a result of hearing about the personal backstories and journeys of the panel members.  Congratulations to Khai Tran who spoke confidently when giving the excellent "thankyou" speech.

Below are some comments from the students' perspectives:

I liked how unique each panel member was, as all the people came from different backgrounds, ethnicities and education levels but all ended up in the field of law … Overall it was an amazing experience and opened my eyes to how broad the field of law really is. Paige Year 10

I really liked that there were so many women involved in the panel. This provided me with hope and I am glad to hear that members of the law industry are so diverse compared to the past. Talia Year 11

It was great to hear about the panellists’ experiences and their journey to getting to where they are, and also what they do in their respective roles. This gave me an insight into the legal profession and also the different pathways and qualifications for specific legal roles. Khai Year 12
