Year 11 VPC Literacy

The Year 11 VPC Literacy class went to Walker Street Gallery in Dandenong yesterday to visit a local community art space. We saw the 9 by 5 exhibition which had lots of beautiful scenery and portraits. Students then got to create their own art work with the gallery curator Esther. We really enjoyed being creative together.

Community Services Students Go BK2 Basics!

Over the last month, Community Services VET students have been helping at a local charity as part of their work placement. BK2 Basics are a charity that provides free food and cheap clothes to the local community and they were wonderful hosts for the three-day placement. The students helped to sort food and serve customers. For many students, it was their first experience of work, and many commented on how they really enjoyed contributing to their community. They learnt how to be punctual and reliable, how to communicate and work safely in the workplace and how to engage with customers in a positive and supportive way. Some also learnt about how to travel independently. It was a real pleasure to see them learning about how they can make a difference in the world.

Here are some reflections from our students about the experience!

On the volunteering day, I really enjoyed helping people. I felt how “one kind act can make your day”.

BK2 Basics Food Bank was a very fun experience. I helped the employer and customers around the workplace. Me and the students worked really hard. I’m just glad we have helped people.

It was fun working with the workers and the supervisor. They showed us how to deal with customers and where the items were. We learnt many new techniques to treat customers. They were happy and they were giving positive feedback on our work. I especially was delighted to work for the first time with the community. I learned to communicate and help the workers with any additional support they needed. This was the first work placement experience I had, and it was the best!
