Edmund Rice Day

Edmund Rice Day encapsulates everything it means to be a TC Man and is an incredible display of the ‘TC Spirit.’  This year the Trinity community was lucky enough to celebrate the Feast Day of Blessed Edmund Rice on his actual feast day of Friday, 5 May. Over the last 200 years, Edmund Rice has impacted so many lives around the world, some by his intervention into their disadvantage, and others by his example that inspires so many to follow in his footsteps.

Edmund Rice Day brings the school community together to commemorate and celebrate our history and charism as a Catholic school in the Edmund Rice tradition. The focus of the day is on service to others, where student’s are introduced to the local charity organisation that they will support through out the year. All funds raised during the day are directed to projects in India. These include:

  • MITHRA in Chennai: a home and school for disabled children who would otherwise be neglected due to poverty and the social stigma associated with disability.
  • Jagruti High School in Mandal: a school for children from the tribal community of Gamit People, people with the lowest social status in India.
  • Jim McGinnis’ work on the railway stations of Kolkata: feeding and clothing and consoling the poorest of the poor.
  • Christian Brothers work with the poor in Kolkata: providing education, support to disadvantaged/underprivileged families and outreach to those most in need.

Our day commenced with a beautiful celebration of the Eucharist in the Trinity Sports Centre led by Fra Oscar Aguilera. It was wonderful to welcome back old boy and guest speaker Evan Alderslade (21) Edmund Rice Camps for Kids who spoke to the masses about his life changing experiences through Edmund Rice Camp for kids and encouraged all boys to step outside their comfort zone by engaging in service activities.

After recess and on a full stomach from the amazing cakes purchased at the TC Junior School cake stall, all boys from Year 4-12 took part in the annual India Fun Run around the bridges to raise money for mission programs in India.

Congratulations to following boys for winning the fun run for their respective year groups and a massive shout out to Kobee Beck for crossing the finishing line first in a time of 24.04 for 6.5km.

The afternoon saw the College join together for an afternoon of fun, food and healthy competition. There were donut eating competitions, indoor golf games, coin toss, 3 point games, tug of war and a very competitive bubble soccer competition.

Through the combined efforts of the student’s considerable funds, which are donated to a variety of orphanages and charities in India, Edmund Rice Day is a small way that our College can support the missions in India.

A total of $15,070.00 was raised on the day with every dollar going towards helping some of the most disadvantaged, who all need our assistance and prayers at this time. I take this opportunity to congratulate all students and families involved and thank them for their fundraising efforts. It truly reflects our ‘Men of Others’ ethos.
