Music and Concert Band

Upcoming Events

Victorian School Music Festival

VSMF is the biggest Australian music competition for schools and community groups to perform for other ensembles, receive an on-stage workshop and compete for a prize adjudicated by some of the world’s best Band Directors. For the first time we have entered the Big Band in the Jazz section along with our regular entry of the Year 8 and 9 concert Band.

The school community can watch a live stream of the school bands via the Victorian School Music Festival website. Both ensembles are performing after 1pm.

Year 8 and 9 Concert Band

The combined Year 8 and 9 Concert Band will travel to Geelong to perform in the Victorian Schools Music Festival on Thursday 10th August. The students are part of the 3-year elective Concert Band Program that the school delivers to students starting in Year 7. The students recently attended their first ever music camp at Rutherford Park along with the Year 7 Band, Big Band and numerous music staff.

The band will perform three pieces at the Festival. The first two pieces are by Australian Composers - Into the Unknown by Paul de Cinque (a musical depiction of the courage and curiosity by many explorers to discover our planet) and Migaloo by Claire Petherick Migaloo (which tells the story of the adult white whale and its annual journey from Antarctica to the warm waters of Queensland). The final piece the band will play is Mar Y Cielo meaning Sea and Sky set as a paso doble in a Spanish Style March.

VUSC Big Band

On Thursday 17th August at the Hawthorn Arts Centre the VUSC Big Band will give its first performance at VSMF after being formed just over a year ago. The 17 students from Years 8 to 10 play various jazz styles either as part of the following sections: saxophone, trumpet, trombone or rhythm section (Drums, Key and Bass).

They also are performing three works:

1.” Hog’s Breath Café” featuring a Baritone Saxophone solo by Phillip in Yr9

2. A beautiful ballad – “If I gave my Heart” featuring Jasmine on piano; and

3. “Jump to It” - a fast Swing piece with solos by Macie (Alto Sax Yr8), William (Trumpet Yr9) and Chloe (Trombone Yr10).
