Assistant Principal's Report

with Sarah Laidlaw

Uniform:

Mount Beauty Secondary College is a school community which supports and encourages the wearing of full school uniform every day.  Students who wear full school uniform show pride in their school and a commitment to being safe and respectful learners.  It is important that when students are representing the school, attending excursions, extra-curricular activities and formal school events that they wear full school uniform.

As a staged response we will be focusing on hoodies from Monday the 7th August.  The students will be reminded in Home Groups every day this week that there is this upcoming focus.  This will be a whole school approach to create consistency around this matter.  Part of the role of school is to get the students ready for the workplace and uniform is a common element in many workplaces.

Students who are wearing a hoodie will be asked to remove it by their homegroup teacher and it will be kept in the office for the day.  It can be collected at the end of the day.

The school is warm and there are plenty of spaces inside for them to keep warm on a cold day.

Bathrooms:

Due to ongoing issues with the bathrooms here at school, the main entry doors will be returned and locked during school hours.  Students are able to collect the key from the front office when they need it and then return it when finished.  The unisex and first aid bathrooms will remain open at all times.

Lockers:

Students will have the opportunity in Home group this week to complete a short survey about the lockers currently here at the school.  This data will be used to inform future decisions about them.

Phone and ear pods/headphones:

Students are reminded that phone use is not permitted during school hours.  All students need to keep their phone in their locker for the day.  If students are found with their phone it will be confiscated by the staff member and taken to the front office for collection at the end of the day.  Continual disregard for the Victorian State Government's policy will result in further follow up such as phone calls home, parent meetings and in major cases in school suspensions.

The aim of the policy is to provide:

  • a safe environment to learn without inappropriate mobile phone use (including cyberbullying) or distractions
  • greater opportunities for social interaction and physical activity during recess and lunchtimes.

The use of technology is important, but the risks and benefits from its use need to be managed.
