GGS placed third in Bastille Day competition

The LOTE Department would like to congratulate Lily Georgeos and Isabel Weibgen for placing third in a state-wide French language competition. The competition, in video format, highlighted the Bastille Day celebration, held on 14 July in France.

Students were asked to create a video to showcase their French language and creativity. Lily and Isabel wrote the following reflection:

Participating in the AFTV Francophonie competition had many benefits. We learned more about the history and culture of France and we improved our speaking skills a lot. We enjoyed working together, learning about words and phrases, grammar structures, editing it, and of course seeing it all come together.”

The pair were also asked their thoughts on language learning.

Learning another language is a good idea. Studies show that it improves memory and brain function, and you become more focused and creative. Bilingual people are usually better at remembering directions, lists, and names. It’s also beneficial if you travel to another country, or converse with people who don’t speak your language."

"France seems like a fantastic place to go. If you’re planning to go to France in the future, we would recommend taking up French. If you’re not, it’s still enjoyable to learn, as the culture and history are fascinating.”

Congratulations Lily and Isabel!
