Ways to ask your child "How was school today?"

Talking with your child about the school day shows you’re interested in what’s going on in their life. Research has shown that this interest can boost a child’s mental health, happiness and wellbeing. It can also have a very positive effect on your child’s behaviour and achievement and shows your child that you value school and education. Getting children to open up about their day, however, is not always easy.  Try not to bombard children with questions as soon as you see them and maybe chatting about your own day will help them to open up as well.

Asking, “How did school go today?” can be too general and often elicits a one word response such as “good”, “fine” or “ okay”.  Similarly, asking “What did you do at school today?” will get you one of two responses – “lots of things” or “not much!”.  Be creative with your questioning, some examples are below, and choose a time when it becomes a discussion as opposed to a rushed exchange.

1. What was the best thing that happened at school today?

2. Tell me one thing you discovered at school today.

3. What did you do for someone that was kind?

4. How did someone help you today?

5. When were you the happiest at school today?

6. Where did you play/spend most of your time at lunchtime today?

7. Who would you like to play with tomorrow that you haven’t played with before?

8. What are you most looking forward to doing at school tomorrow?

LUNCHTIME CLUBS

Lunchtime Clubs are fully operational.  These clubs operate to give alternatives to the rush of the playground, develop interests and friendships. A big thank you to the staff for continuing to support the Clubs program and enabling us to offer these activities to the students with the direction of our school Clubs leaders who do a fantastic job coordinating and presenting.

Always lots of smiles. 😊
