Parent Helpers and Safe Schools
Parents who wish to assist in classrooms are most welcome. It is required that you complete the online Parent Helpers Program, print the Certificate of Completion, and bring this along with a current Working with Children Check card, to an information/induction session. Following induction parent helpers will be added to the WWCC Register at school. This is a requirement if you wish to assist children at Solway in any capacity. In addition to this, to comply with the Department of Education Child Safe Policy, all parents and visitors to the school are required to sign a Child Safe Code of Conduct on their first day of helping.
Please note: Prep parents have all of Term 1 to organise their documentation as we do not require Parent Helpers in Prep until Term 2. This gives our newest students time to get to know their peers and teachers.
Anaphylaxis
We have a number students at Solway who suffer severe anaphylactic reactions to certain foods. Nuts and eggs are of particular concern. Since students often eat lunch and snack together we are seeking the support of all school families and asking them not to send any products that may contain nuts to school, so we can minimise the likelihood of the students coming into contact with potentially life threatening foods.
School Crossing Safety
School Crossings are provided by the local council to ensure the safety of students and their families travelling to and from school. At Solway we are fortunate to have four Crossing Supervisors. There are strict procedures to be observed and followed at the crossings to maintain the safety of everyone.
ALL pedestrians are required to observe the correct crossing procedures as advised by the Crossing Supervisors, which include remaining behind the white line until the whistle is blown. All vehicles MUST stop behind the white line on the road when the Supervisor is on the crossing. Strict adherence to these procedures will keep everyone safe.
There are clear parking restrictions around the school crossings which ensure clear visibility for traffic and crossing users, which must also be observed. Please check out all parking signs carefully and avoid parking near crossings during the signed times.
Traffic Around the School
We are all aware how congested the streets become around the school at drop off and pick up, and seek the support of all parent drivers to ensure the utmost care is taken when using the streets and parking near school. Please try and park a little further away and walk the last part of the journey to school with your children whenever possible to minimise the impact of cars in our surrounding streets.
