Foundation - Learning Snapshot

What a wonderful term of learning we’ve had in the Foundation community. The Foundation team are beyond proud and have enjoyed stopping and reflecting on the many wonderful achievements the children have accomplished in their second term of schooling. The independence and resilience the children have developed over these nine weeks is incredible and we look forward to watching the children continue to grow in resilience and confidence as a learner and member of the St Luke’s community.

We would like to say a big thank you to you, we thank you for your support and partnership throughout this term. As we mentioned at our very first Foundation information evening ‘together we are the foundation upon which the children grow into life-long learners!’ We feel very fortunate to be a part of this.

Reports were released this week on PAM, the Foundation teachers have spent the last few weeks moderating work across the unit and writing these. Please take the time to read and share with your child. We’re very proud of the social, emotional and academic growth all our learners have made during Semester One and we look forward to watching them achieve their learning goals in Term Three.

Thank you for your generosity towards our Winter Appeal, our basket was overflowing! They will be very much appreciated by St Vinnies who will distribute them to those within our local community who need our help. It has been a wonderful experience for children and a learning opportunity to discuss ways in which we can follow in Jesus’ example of caring and sharing for others.

Staff will be resting over the holidays and taking a break. This includes not answering emails until Monday 11th of July. Please be patient with your questions, they will be answered as soon as teachers return to school.

We hope you all have a wonderful holiday and thank you for all your support this term.

We look forward to another marvellous term of learning!

Junior Learning Community

We have had a wonderful end of Term, thank you to all the students for approaching this Term with such a positive attitude. Our excursion was a fantastic conclusion of our Inquiry unit ‘How Things have Changed Over Time’. The children enjoyed learning about local Yorta Yorta artwork at SAM and exploring many interesting old artefacts in the Shepparton History Museum.

Some of the highlights as told by the children were…

“Going upstairs at SAM to see some cool art.”- Harrison

“ I got to go on the bus for the first time” - Neil

“My favourite art was the Breaking Cups with the big seeds” - Felix`

"We met Geoff, he was really nice and showed us pictures of Shepparton from 100 years ago!” - Penelope

“It felt good to be able to go on an excursion!” -Avinea

Opening the locked box at the Heritage Museum.”- Alice

Thank you to those that volunteered to help, we were very grateful to all that gave up their time and it was wonderful to have some extra helping hands on board. We look forward to the next opportunity that we can welcome more of you on site.

Another thank you is in order, to all that have donated to our Mini Vinnies Drive. It has been lovely to see the generosity of many as the children discuss giving those who are less fortunate than themselves; particularly in these colder months. This has tied so much of our Religious Education learnings throughout the Term as the children have learned about how we can live like Jesus and how the Holy Spirit acts through us. It was fantastic to hear some making the connection between charitable giving and our learnings throughout the term.

To finish the Term in Mathematics, we have been investigating Location and Direction. The children have discussed the language of anti-clockwise, clockwise, half turns and quarter turns and have followed directions in order to get to a different location within the building. The children have also attempted to make and follow a list of directions for a buddy. This was a really fun way to end the term and it was a great opportunity to move around our new learning space.

With the conclusion of our Inquiry unit, our Writing focus has been around the development of scripts for Keynote Presentations. Students have practised watching videos and taking notes, as well as using Google to source information about items being replaced by Smartphones!  It was impressive to see just how quickly the children learnt how to navigate their way around Keynote, adding animations, recordings and pictures sourced online. This presentation was the Ongoing Assessment for our Inquiry Unit and hopefully you have had the opportunity to have a look at your child’s work on PAM.

Reports went out on Wednesday, the teachers have spent the last few weeks moderating work across the unit and writing these. Please remember that these are also on PAM, we do encourage you to read them with your child as this may allow you to discuss learning goals for the upcoming semester or congratulate them on a wonderful start to the year.

We hope you all have a safe and happy break. It has been a busy Term, we have jammed a lot into these nine weeks and we look forward to returning to Term Three fresh and ready to learn.

Thank you for all you do with your children at home and thank you to all the children for a wonderful Semester One. Enjoy the holidays!

What an amazing term!

Students should be very proud of their many achievements during the past nine weeks and throughout what has been a brilliant first semester!

Over the past few weeks students have loved creating clever and thoughtful poems. They have shown great enthusiasm for incorporating literary devices such as similes, personification and alliteration to improve their Haiku, Ode and Limerick poems. In the pictures below, you will find some wonderful examples of student Odes to their new school building.

In Mathematics students have concluded their focus on area, perimeter, mass, capacity and angles.

In Religious Education, students eagerly explained how they demonstrate the Fruits of the Spirit in their lives through the use of the application Keynote.

Students concluded their research about the historical figure Ned Kelly. On PAM you will see we have uploaded an ongoing assessment task which assessed the students' understanding of Ned Kelly’s life.

A huge thank you for the kindness shown towards our Winter Appeal! St. Vinnies will receive the donated goods and distribute them to those in need in our local community.

Reports are now released on PAM. If you haven’t already had an opportunity to do so, please spend some time and reflect on the many fantastic achievements your child has achieved this semester. The Middle Learning Community team are very proud of the social, emotional, academic growth the students have shown throughout this semester and look forward to many more celebrations of learning in Term Three.

Have a happy and safe holiday,

Reminders:

  • Religious Education and Inquiry assessment tasks have been released on PAM. It would be great if you could sit down with your child and celebrate their learning.

Wow! What a fabulous time we all had on camp, teachers and students all came back very tired which was a testament to the engagement and participation of all. We all learnt plenty about the gold rush and got to experience several underground mine tours. Some lucky students even found gold. On reflection, all students had a different favourite experience. The Aura Light and Sound Show was a highlight for me and I am sure Mr Watts and Mrs Liddell’s hearts are still pounding from going down the vertical slide. The whole experience was a fabulous way to end our term and I think I speak for many when we say we are so pleased the children got to experience a camp after the last few years of cancellations.

Grade 6 Student Camp Recap

I enjoyed camp. We did lots of activities including going down mines and walking around the streets of Sovereign Hill. We got breakfast and lunch  and tea each day. We got time to use our 20 dollars. We also got to gold pan. It was a good experience. Cam

I really enjoyed camp because we got to find gold and go down to the really deep mine. We got to have yummy dinner and then we got to buy stuff so I thought it was a really good experience. Nate

I had fun at camp because I found some gold in the river and I liked the vertical slide that was at the Discovery Centre. The dinner and breakfast was nice as well. Archie

I liked camp because we got to find gold and watch it be turned into a bar. Also we got to do the vertical slide which was really fun. The food was great too. The mines were really far down but they were really fun to see the real gold and the tools that they used. Clancy

I really enjoyed camp because of the activities. The thing I enjoyed the most was going down the Debra Mine in Bendigo. Sovereign Hill was fun and I really enjoyed it when we went and did the Sound and Light Show. The food there was really delish! But the best part of the whole thing was in Sovereign Hill. Our cabin had its own bathroom and TV. The best part of all of that was the people I had in my cabin, Ryder, Cam, Sol and I. Jack

Camp was amazing. We had lots of fun. The food was great and on top of that I had a blast with my friends. I found gold, amethyst and other gems. There was one thing I disliked and that was the mats we had to sleep on the second night other than that is was great. Manny

Camp was really fun in Bendigo and Ballarat. In Ballarat we stayed the night in cabins, and the boys had lots of fun, especially me, Johan, Blessing and Kevin. There was a TV in some of the boys' cabins, but unfortunately we couldn't use it for the whole time. It was fun having free lollipops from my sister, since it was her birthday. - Isaac

Camp at Ballarat and Bendigo were both fabulous experiences because of the behaviour of the students made it a whole lot easy to transition from our groups. Alyssa

I really enjoyed camp because there was a vertical slide which I really enjoyed and the 8 teachers provided some nice food, and for dinner we ate at the bakery in Ballarat. I had some really good people in my cabin and had a good time roaming in Ballarat and a good time going down the vertical slide in Bendigo. Talia

I really enjoyed the mirror room and hanging out with my friends in their cabin, those friends were Blessing, Kevin and Johan. Brodie

I enjoyed panning for gold with Brodie and Kevin. I found a ton of gold. Johan

I really enjoy camp because of the cabins and mining. I liked the cabin that I was in and the tv, we could barely use it though.

I enjoyed camp because of the underground mines. I liked the voices telling us where to go and telling us information.  I just felt like it made me a lot more curious not having a tour Guide there. But my favourite bit was the free time just to look around because we went into the houses and it was really cool to see what they looked like back  then. Devon

I found camp really fun and exciting, my favourite part was definitely going down the vertical slide. Alicia

I enjoyed camp because of the vertical slide at the Discovery Centre at Bendigo and at Ballarat with the mines and the shopping. - By Isla

I loved camp we went to the lolly shop and we went on a mine tour it was amazing the first night we stayed in cabins the second night we had a big sleepover with the 5/6 unit camp was so fun - Ellah

I really enjoyed camp. I really loved all of the little shops around because they were so real. I couldn’t really get much sleep there. Their vertical slide looked really fun. I was in a cabin with Alyssa, Kiara and Talia. The spaghetti was good but all of the rest of it wasn’t that good but all in all it was really good. I really enjoyed camp because I found gold. We got to experience what it was like in the olden days and lots of other things! Everything was so good! We got to buy lots of different things from the stores! Camp was spectacular. Mikayla

I really enjoyed the first part of camp at Sovereign Hill. Going through all the shops and spending money was really fun. Indianna

I had a lot of fun at camp, my favourite parts were exploring Sovereign Hill and looking at all the shops and old buildings. I also really enjoyed going down the vertical slide at the Discovery Centre in Bendigo. - Harper

I really like going down the slide and the people in my cabin it was so cool to see people make gold bars and she real gold and find it -Kiara

My favourite part of camp was the vertical slide at the Discovery Centre. I was really scared and then I dropped to the hanging position and let go. I felt weightless and strong and was proud that I had done it. I also hit the jackpot and found lots of specks of gold. I wonder if it's worth anything? Aiden

My favourite part of camp was Sovereign Hill especially gold panning and it got better when I found gold. The Discovery Centre was all right but the slide made it better than it was. Ryder

Science

Last Friday as part of the Science Unit - 'Water Around Us', the Grade 1/2 students had a visit from Kristy at Goulburn Valley Water. They had lots of fun learning about the water cycle and making their own water cycle in a bag.
