What a busy Term 2 it has been down on Farm!

Workshop

During the last few weeks, Year 11 and 12 students have designed, fabricated and installed new piggery flush buckets and fabricated new replacement guards for the mix- all auger. In the last few weeks, the Year 11 students have made a significant change to the old nurse spray truck which involved the Year 11's practicing their welding and have made significant progress. Students who have been rostered to workshop in the last month have also made progress in achieving their green licences.

Cropping

Seeding went well with 360ha of Canola, 400ha of Wheat, 230ha of Barley (not including 77ha getting mouldboard ploughed now), 70ha of Triticale, 101ha of Oats, 232ha of Lupins and 54ha of Field peas being sown. Post emergent chemicals were applied on all Canola and Lupin crops as well as NS31 applied to all our Canola crops.  So far we have had 145mm of rain.

Piggery

It’s been a busy term in the piggery with Certificate III Pork students selecting their replacement gilts and 2 new boars, Hugo, and Archer. We sold 153 baconers to Linley Valley Abattoir and 16 were slaughtered for the college kitchen. Students have been undertaking Certificate III in Pork unit practicals, such as artificial insemination, pregnancy scanning and administering medication. Next term we will focus on incorporating our new gilts into our active breeding herd.

Cattle/Chooks

Calving has finished for the year with 21 happy and healthy calves of all different colours joining our herd! Certificate III students will be getting the opportunity to mark and vaccinate these little beauties in the near future.  We are in the process of replacing some water troughs so we can rotate our herds onto suitable pastures for their stage of production. We are looking forward to having our calves in to closely inspect and play with!

The chooks are still doing what chooks do – laying delicious eggs!

WA Competition Shearing Association (WACSA) Training Day

We have partnered with WACSA to host a training day for students on Saturday 9th August. This is a fantastic opportunity for students to work directly with industry to further develop their skills and knowledge and work with industries finest!

DURING THE SCHOOL HOLIDAYS

Term 3 Short Courses Year 12 Students

Mrs Corsini will be sending forms for the 2022 Short Courses being offered in Term 3 to all students who filled in expression of interest forms. Please check your emails over the break and get the forms back as soon as possible to hold your spots. madison.davey@education.wa.edu.au

Certificate III in Pork and Agriculture Students

All Certificate III Agriculture and Pork students have their plans which outlines the units they will be studying and what they must complete within the unit and due dates. All students in this group have been working hard this term to start their qualifications and we wish them all the best in the training to achieve the required skills and knowledge to be deemed competent. If you haven’t submitted your assignments by 1st July 2022, please complete them over the break and email them in. Watch your emails throughout the break because farm staff will be busy marking.

Third Party Reports

Mrs Corsini has spoken to the Year 12 and 11 students in VET Theory Class regards to third party reports and will do so again next week. The third-party reports are evidence towards the students Certificate II in Agriculture or Certificate III in Agriculture practicals. Mrs Corsini will send what the requirements are out via email or through connect. We also need video evidence that supports the paperwork. Mrs Corsini recommends getting a USB and putting all evidence on the USB each night or week to bring back to the college on return.  If any students are interested in completing these reports, please see Mrs Corsini.

Have a great break and see you next Term 🙂
