This course is designed to foster an appreciation and understanding of both Foods and Textiles. In Foods, there is a strong emphasis on skill development, nutrition and wise decision-making so that students build a strong foundation for the future.

Foods classes provide opportunities for students to investigate elements of taste, texture and combinations of ingredients whilst developing sound food preparation skills. There is an emphasis on following the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating for this age group and producing light, easy dishes for breakfast, lunch and dinner that can be replicated at home.Ā

In Textiles, students build on Year 7 skills with the aim being to develop interest, confidence and creativity in making small projects with a variety of materials. Students learn hand sewing and to operate the sewing machine, overlocker and iron to practise techniques and bring their work to life. Design principles assist them to explore their ideas, make decisions on a final choice and construct the item.Ā

Students are assessed on the degree to which they can:

  • Identify ingredients and cooking processes which assist in maintaining a healthy lifestyle and environmental sustainability
  • Demonstrate an increasing knowledge, skill development and confidence to make considered choices when designing and interpreting recipies
  • Explore possible and suitable materials, tools and equipment to develop their design ideas
  • Select and justify their choices of materials, ingredients, equipment and techniques
  • Generate and communicate their ideas and plans in a variety of ways and using appropriate technical terms
  • Construct their projects and tasks following all safety and hygiene practicesĀ 
  • Work individually and collaboratively to share resources
  • Develop a plan to evaluate the success of their design ideas and processes.Ā 

Evidence of achievement is gained from practical projects, observation of work practices, personal evaluation and reviews and set homework tasks.
