Friday sees the last day of Term 2 and what a term it has been! No wonder students and staff are feeling tired. With the amount of illness we have seen over the past weeks and the amount of energy our students and staff have expended on all the wonderful things we do here it is well and truly time to recharge batteries. It is really important that everyone takes time to have a good break. This doesn’t mean that our students can’t use some of the holiday break to keep in touch with their studies. Our senior students in particular will have some study and that is important. What is does mean though is that we have the space in our day-to-day to make sure we can attend to our physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing as well as ‘get things done’.
Perhaps the key to making the most of the holiday is knowing what we need to do in order to begin Term 3 in a prepared way and planning our time so that the things we have to do are really well balanced with the things we want to do.
Our students should make sure that their uniform is in good order and for the students who wear skirts this means perhaps making sure that their hem is at the right length. Those students who don’t have the right socks can use the next two weeks to support our local businesses and make some purchases. The same goes for those who are still wearing black runners instead of school shoes. They should make sure that they have everything ready for Term 3 classwork wise so that there is nothing that they need to push into next term and they can start afresh.
It is also time to think about how we want to ‘be’ in Term 3 - is there something we want to change, something we want to stop doing or perhaps something we want to improve on?
Our students and staff should be commended on the energy and commitment they bring to our community, to their studies and to their work. It is now time for them to take some time for themselves. Recently some of our staff completed Religious Education Accreditation with Sr Rita Malivisi and it was centered around attending to the ‘quiet times’. Entitled Fill My Cup, staff explored scripture and the models of Jesus and Mary MacKiIllop as people who were able to take time to look after their spirit, to replenish their energy, to tap into the sacred and literally ‘fill their cup’. I hope that the coming two weeks gives everyone the time, space and opportunity to fill their cup.
