DRIVER EDUCATION SURVEY FOR PAST STUDENTS

JOHN HARLEY - CHARTSEC & ROSPA

My name is John Harley and I am the former Manager of CHARTSEC (Charlton Traffic Safety Education Centre). I am also currently a board member of ROSPA (Road Safety Promotions Australia) which is a recently formed body seeking to promote road safety in Rural Victoria in the first instance.

ROSPA has combined with Deakin University to conduct research into a number of road safety issues and in the first half of 2022 is working with the Freelancing Hub of Deakin University to undertake research into the effectiveness of Pre-Driver Education, especially focussing on CHARTSEC.

So, I am writing to schools to seek their assistance in this research:

  • Schools that have attended CHARTSEC over the years
  • Schools that have not attended CHARTSEC which will become the control group for the research.
  • Both groups are equally important to this research.

The scope and approach for this project by the Deakin University Freelancing Hub will include the following: …

  1. Research and analysis of UK and Scandinavian policies, campaigns and education. This will be used to further identify and quantify key aspects of our survey
  2. Creation of an informative and analytical survey focussing on past attendees of the CHARTSEC’s early driving program. Respondents will answer questions such as age, gender, license type, accident history and general location of any accidents as well as feedback on the value of the program.
  3. This information will be used to develop a strategic and effective method of communicating to minors the importance of road safety, and awareness.
  4. The information will also be used by ROSPA to engage with government and other funding agencies

Unfortunately with Covid, staff shortages and its associated pressure on schools the response rate was less than 100 and we are looking for at least 500 responses so that it can be compared with the Monash University study in 2000. If we can get a positive outcome it will give us the chance to go to Government re funding for CHARTSEC.

Therefore the survey is continuing to be live.
