'Be The Best That You Can Be' - Promoting Independant Learning and Growth

Year 9 Sports Coaching

This semester in sports coaching, some fortunate Year 9 students were lucky enough to have the opportunity to further their coaching ability. Students focused on working together in groups to plan coaching sessions and then teaching their plans initially to each other and then to Primary School students.

Term 1 was geared towards a focus on our Year 9 students practicing coaching with one another to prepare themselves for when they went out to our allocated primary schools. They learned skills that every good coach and coaching session should have.

From the beginning of Term 2, Year 9 students then expanded their knowledge by going to Primary Schools and putting their learning to use. The selected Primary Schools were Jells Park, Brandon Park and Wheelers Hill. The Primary School kids were excited to be coached by the Year 9’s. They were very engaged and had lots of fun learning about how to play new games. Some of the students even kept asking their PE teacher when the Year 9’s would be returning to coach them again! Both schools enjoyed the coaching experience, and our Year 9 students learned some valuable coaching skills along the way.

Some of our students reflect on their experience below:

“Our class was able to go to Brandon Park Primary School and teach the year 4’s. We were all excited to be given this opportunity to go to a different school and expand our coaching skills. Some favourite games that we coached were Dodge Ball, Fruit Salad and Octopus. The key coaching skills we focused on improving were transitions between activities, voice projection, activity selection, planning, key coaching points and equipment organisation.”

“We had a lot of fun and learned a lot of skills we can use in our future coaching. The Year 9 Sports Coaching classes are grateful for the experience and learning opportunity.”

8 ACE Water Bombing Fundraiser

One of the groups in the 8ACE Project class asked for staff to volunteer to be water bombed to raise money for a Community Project. Teachers bravely volunteered and stood in the freezing cold, with only a poncho to protect them, while a long line of students eagerly awaited a chance to bomb their teachers. The kids were ecstatic with the turnout and managed to raise $103. Well done 8ACE - what a hilarious and fun way to raise money for a good cause.
