"Be The Best That You Can Be"  - Promoting Independant Learning and Growth

What's happening to our Skittles?!

As part of finishing off the Chemistry Unit, our Year 7's looked at how solutes dissolved in solvents with a process called diffusion. This is what they discovered:

Year 8 Mandarin

This is the work from 8MDRN4 - Harper, Jimmy, Jacqui, Chloe, Asher, Logan and Dylan C.

These students were learning to introduce daily activities in Mandarin sentences. In this class, they looked at the differences between Mandarin and English by color-coding the structure. Some of them also managed to write Chinese characters.

Year 9 Chinese Excursion to Chinatown!

Our Year 9 Mandarin class was very fortunate to get an opportunity to go to Chinatown on the 3rd of June. In the morning we all met at Glen Waverley Station. Each pair of students was assigned with a leadership role for one of the activities. For example, the leaders for the morning had to guide our class on which platform to go and where to interchange.

We arrived at Museum of Chinese Australian History at 9.30am. We had a very kind tour guide, guiding us through the museum. We went 200 years back when the Chinese people immigrated to Australia for mining. The voyage was very tough, hundreds of miners had to travel in small ships for months. The miners faced great difficulty while traveling but there were many miners who reached to Australia successfully. They invented great tools and worked very hard. For the final part of the museum tour, we found the tail of a dragon which we followed up for a long time. The tour guide explained that the dragon was the biggest dragon in the Southern Hemisphere, which was called the Millennium Dragon.

After the museum tour, we split into two groups to do Scavenger Hunt around Chinatown. We needed to get twenty points to pass. Finding each correct characters would give us one point and asking a shop owner and then reading their shop sign in Chinese would give us three points. We had a lot of fun walking around Chinatown and challenging ourselves reading and speaking Chinese.

Once we finished the Scavenger Hunt we met up and went for lunch at Din Tai Fung Restaurant in a shopping centre. The restaurant was really cool because they had these robots that walked around and gave food out and we got to order from an iPad. We got different types of dumplings and buns, some also ordered fried rice and noodle soups. The food was amazing!

After this we navigated through the shopping centre to Melbourne Central Station, from where we took the train back. Our adventure to Chinatown was very fun!

'Think You Know' Presentation

On Friday 3 June, students attended a 45-minute presentation called 'Think You Know' by the Monash Youth Resource Officers from the Education/Proactive Policing Unit. They discussed important topics such as cyber safety, online bullying, sexting and grooming awareness. Students were engaged and learned a lot about being aware online and what steps to take should something happen.

KIOSC – Major Crime Investigation

On the 26th May the Year 9 Forensic Science set out to solve a crime, sort of.

How is evidence collected and analysed to solve a case?

Solving crime is an important element in our society. Police and other law enforcement agencies now have many technologies at hand in order to solve crime using scientific methods and techniques.

At KIOSC Centre students investigated DNA Gel Electrophoresis, Polygraph Datalogging, UV Spectrophotometer and Virtual Reality to help solve a crime.

What were they thinking? Surely it was who looked coolest in their crime scene suites?

Over the course of the day students participated in a range of forensic activities as they investigated a cold case in a attempt to find out what happened. Was it really murder? Who did it? Was there enough evidence to convict?

In the end, they put all their evidence together and presented their finding for the police to solve the case.

What was the best thing about the KIOSC Excursion?

Which activity was the most interesting?

What Forensic Science did you learn that you weren't expecting?

Would you recommend going to KIOSC to other students.

Why?

YEAR 9 ROBOTICS EXCURSION TO WAVERLEY MEADOWS PRIMARY SCHOOL

The Year 9 Robotics class had the opportunity to visit Waverley Meadows Primary School and showcase their robotics projects, as part of the community connections aspect of the subject.

The students enjoyed their visit to the school, showed their skills and knowledge in Robotics and were able to practice their problem solving and leadership skills. Also, they were able to inspire the younger generation in robotics and unleash their creativity.

Lastly, we would like to thank Mr. Benjamin Elliot and Waverley Meadows Primary School for the opportunity to visit his Year 6 class and the amazing cooperation.

STEM in Sport: Darebin Velodrome

On Friday 3 June, students participated in a two hour on-track session with an instructor from Aus Cycling. Students learned the basics of track cycling, including how to ride in control and how to maneuver around the track safely. They also had the chance to participate in challenges such as time trials and fastest lap attempts. This cycling session was done to consolidate our learning after looking at the forces in play in different sporting scenarios.
