THE FEAST OF THE SACRED HEART

Even though we celebrate our College Feast Day next Friday, today is the actual Feast of the Sacred Heart in the liturgical calendar. This day always occurs on the Friday after Corpus Christi, or the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ. On the Feast of the Sacred Heart (and at our own celebration), we remember Jesus’ great love for humanity shown in the image of the Sacred Heart. This devotion began in France in the 17th Century, where

through the visions and efforts of Fr Jean Eudes (1602-1680) and St Margaret Mary Alacoque (1647-1690), it was made a Feast Day - first for the French church and then throughout the world.

Many of the schools and colleges owned and run by the RNDM Sisters were named 'Sacred Heart', because of the religious name taken by Euphrasie Barbier, Marie du Coeur de Jesus (Mary of the Heart of Jesus). This name reflected Euphrasie’s own great love for the Sacred Heart and its place in her life.

For us in this place, in our own life situation, Sacred Heart spirituality is about nothing less than living out the way in which Jesus loves us: fully, lavishly, radically, completely, sacrificially.

This feast invites us to meditate on some of the most important questions in life:

  • How can we show more love to our family, our friends and even strangers?
  • How do we welcome strangers and outcasts?
  • What would it mean for me to have a heart like his?
  • How can my heart become more “sacred”?

On this day, we can reflect on the words of Fr James Martin: “In the end, the Sacred Heart is about understanding Jesus’s love for us and inviting us to love others as Jesus did.”

Happy Feast Day!
