YEAR 10 GATE CRIMINOLOGY EXCURSION

Throughout our Criminology unit, we have been learning about criminal profiling from Professor Dave Keatley from Murdoch University. Over the semester, he met with us three times and challenged the students to investigate two cold cases - ‘The Zodiac Killer’ and ‘The bombing of Flight CP-21’. It has been a fascinating experience for the students and for some it has helped them with their future career choices.

As a culmination to our Criminology unit, we visited Murdoch University this week where we had a great introduction to the courses they offer on Criminology and Law. The students learnt about ‘The Crime Triangle’ and how it required a motivated offender, a suitable target, and an opportunity of place. They then heard about how to take away the opportunity of place according to statistics. This was followed by a mock trial in the Murdoch Law Court where students took on the roles of prosecutor, defendants and witnesses.

From there, we headed down to Fremantle where we enjoyed dinner together at Cicerello’s followed by a Twilight Tour of Fremantle Jail. This was quite a different experience to the daytime tours. Strong, tough Year 10 students were jumping out of their skins at a few of the surprises. I am surprised the screams weren’t heard in Sorrento!

I wish to acknowledge the work of a wonderful group of students who fully emerged themselves in the unit and who Professor Dave said produced better solutions than many of his university students.
