Love Jazz?
Ballarat High School is busily preparing our repertoire for the upcoming Geoff Herkes Memorial Concert, to be staged by the Ballarat Jazz Club, at The Ballarat Golf Club on July 31st between 1pm and 4pm.
Geoff was passionate about involving young people in the jazz idiom that he adored and promoted so enthusiastically and this is the latest instalment of the legacy that he originated and developed. He first approached us at Ballarat High in 2014 with the idea of students staging a show as part of the Ballarat Jazz Club's monthly concert series. His enthusiasm and positive approach were infectious and we needed little encouragement to take up this most generous offer.
And so, after a break due to Covid last year, we return with a show that should have something for everyone. In addition to our talented students performing jazz and blues, we have two feature vocal artists in Dani Fry and Ashleigh Kelman. Both women are amazing vocalists and have extensive teaching and performing credentials and experience.
At the concert we will also debut The Herb Alpert Experience, featuring a boutique collection of Tijuana classics expertly arranged by Damien Woods and performed by a specially assembled ensemble of Ballarat High staff and guests.
Of course, the day will also feature the talents of our superb house band with Damien Woods on keys, Ian Riethoff on double bass and Alistair Lethlean on drums.
