Off to Ohio: Ethan Port-Louis

SINCE the age of five, Ethan Port-Louis has dreamed of playing basketball in the US. And in just a few days' time, he will board a gruelling 38-hour flight to get there.

Ethan, a Year 12 Specialised Basketball Program student and determined guard, has formally accepted a last-minute invitation to compete in two tournaments in the US over two weeks in July. Coaches at Andrews Osborne Academy in Willoughby, Ohio, sent an invitation asking if Ethan would like to join them as part of the National AAU Tournaments (Amateur Athletic Association) - after seeing online footage of Ethan playing for the Canons.

"It has been an insane joint effort from all family members including aunties and uncles in such a very short period of time to rally together to allow him to accept the invitation,'' Ethan's proud father, Lloyd, explained.

"Ethan's dream to attend and compete in the USA college NCAA competition has been a driving force for him to excel since he was five years old. We are incredibly proud of him and please join us in our hopes and prayers in wishing Ethan all the good luck and success.''

The tournaments are a major part of the selection process in which college coaches from all over America gather to select players for future teams and scholarships.

To stand a chance, Ethan will have to travel for 38 hours to reach Ohio in the mid-west region of the United States. He will board and train at the Andrews Osborne Academy during the trip.

The tournaments are being held on July 15 to 17 at in Columbus Ohio and the following weekend in Louisville, Kentucky .

On Saturday,  25 June, Year 11 student Mary Carter represented St Norbert College in the Speak for Faith Competition.

The competition is sponsored by the Catenian Association of WA is for Senior Secondary students. After students deliver a prepared five minute speech, each contestant then returned to the podium to speak for up to two minutes on an impromptu topic. Mary’s prepared speech was about the Sacrament of Baptism and the impromptu topic she had to speak on was on the Plenary Council and suggestions she would give to the members.

The judges congratulated all students for their preparation and confident speaking abilities. Mary was an excellent representative of the College and the only Year 11 student to participate on the day, with all other contestants being Year 12 students from other schools.  The judging panel was made up of experts in the field of Religious Education including the current Director of Religious Education for Catholic Education – Deacon Mark Powell.

Well done Mary! The College is very proud of you and your hard work.

A big thank you to Miss Hilton for her support in the lead up to the day and to Mrs Silva and Miss Abel for accompanying me on the day to support Mary.
