From the Classroom

Foundation

Mid Year Reports are now complete and will be sent home in a large white envelope next Wednesday. They will be placed in your child’s plastic pocket for safe keeping.  Enjoy reading and celebrate the success your child has achieved in their first semester of their school journey.  I am their very proud teacher and love telling them all how far they have come in such a short time.

So what tasks can you do at home to assist your child’s learning? You can…

Involve your child in alphabet activities. Practice the upper/ lower case letters, saying their names as well as common sounds. Encourage them to write at home with the assistance of sight words. It is essential to continue reading take home books and sight words each night. Linking these words to their books will assist with retention. Making flash cards, handwriting or keyboarding these would also be beneficial. Access Reading Eggs using the school login that was supplied early this year would be great.

In Numeracy, encourage them to count using a 100 chart, pointing as they count. Start at any given number and count forwards, as well as backwards. Skip counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s is strongly recommended. Allow them to use and sort money, discussions about time using the calendar as well as clocks would consolidate learning in this area.

In the Foundation classroom we always have plenty of to time to eat morning tea and lunch. I am often the Lunch Box Detective and encouraging some children to eat a bit more. The pie warmer has been very popular and this has definitely created interest at lunch time. Please ensure your child’s name is written very clearly as some have been difficult to decipher as they have rub off during the process of home to pie warmer. A few children are also bringing a food flask filled with warm noodles, pasta or soup.

Next term I will taking Long Service Leave for 8 weeks. I am delighted to welcome Kerryn Jarvis into the Foundation Classroom as my replacement. Kerryn met the children yesterday and she is familiar with our school working as a Casual Replacement Teacher. She is looking forward to being part of our wonderful school staff and community for those weeks.

Ukulele Club

This term as a weekly lunchtime activity, we have had students come along to the multi-purpose room to try out the ukulele and learn basic techniques and chords. Pictured here are some of the Ukulele Club members who have been working towards learning the song 'You are my Sunshine'. We may have to organise an amplifier and electrify our ukuleles for this group who look keen to rock out!
