Dear Earth

At the end of Term 2 some grades from years 1-6 read the story of ‘Dear Earth’ with me.  It is a beautifully illustrated book about a young girl named Tessa who writes a letter to the Earth.  She shares her thoughts and feelings about living on such a wondrous planet.

I asked the students to write their own Dear Earth letters.  They were so heartfelt with gratitude and warmth that I realised they needed to be read to by wider audience.  I do hope these letters resonate the power of these little voices when dealing with such a big issue, caring for our environment.  I had so many students wanting theirs to be published that I will share them with you over the next few newsletters.  Enjoy!

Reduce, Reuse and Recycle

At Marlborough Primary School this term, I am encouraging all students to look at ways to reduce, reuse and recycle materials from their home.  Last term, I showed them a bowl that was made by bread clips and the students were interested in learning that bottle tops can be recycled into wheelchairs and prosthetic limbs.

As a community we would love to collect these, so they are not wasted in landfill.  I will leave a bowl (recycled bread clips) at the office window for you to leave your donations and I will pass these on to respective companies at the end of this term.   It will be amazing for them to see the quantities that could be collected as a group.

Thank you for your participation in making our Earth a wondrous place to live.

Indonesian News

Selamat Datang Term 3!

This term we will be participating in Sayembara Lisan, a state-wide Indonesian speaking Competition. This is run by VILTA- Victorian Indonesian Language Teachers Association and the final will be held at University of Melbourne on Saturday 14th of August.

The first round will be held at school and we will have Bu Devathas from Heathmont College visit our school to judge our students as part of the Maroondah region. The competition includes simple questions and the students will either sing a song, describe a picture, or answer questions about a short passage in Indonesian.

Semoga sukses to all students who have entered the competition!

This term, our Grade 6 students will have the opportunity to attend an Indonesian Day with four other primary schools in our region at Heathmont College. The students will participate in different workshops such as mask making, martial arts and Indonesian dancing. The students will also take part in a skype session with Heathmont College’s sister school in Yogyakarta. We have a great partnership with Heathmont College and this is a wonderful opportunity to see a secondary school language program in action.

Terima kasih,
