Principal's Post

Dear Parents,
Mazenod has won the Division 1 ACC Soccer Final for the last four years and won the State Championship in 2020. No pressure on this year’s team as they were hoping to make it a record five consecutive championships. Playing against St Bernard’s Essendon they led 1-0 before the opposition scored 2 quick goals to take the lead. Marcus Di Meo levelled the score with the goal of the season. The match went into extra time and in a final shoot-out, our boys lost 3-2 in a heartbreaking conclusion to a fantastic season. Congratulations to all the boys involved and Mr Emilio Montoya on their gallant effort Wednesday afternoon.
The players involved were Daniel Basadur, Nicholas Dal Ben, Marcus Di Meo, George Ibrahim, Christian Italiano, Mark Kihara, Stefan Labutte, Michael Lanzone, Cameron McEwan, Rayhon Omar, Alex Pinneri, Anthony Signorelli, Sebastian Speranza, Rahul Suresh, Barath Suresh, Emman Theodorou, Jakob Tziotas and Jordi Valadon.
The Year 11 Retreat took place this week. Our Oblate Youth Ministry Team of Anthony Bolling, Luke Schaeffer and Adil Alvares led the students and the programme under the supervision of Mr Cristiano Grosso and Mr John Tighe. It was heartening to complete this event on the calendar, especially in light of the National Oblate Youth Encounter cancellation, which was scheduled for the school holidays and located at Mazenod. Regardless of the most recent COVID concerns, interstate travel for our Oblate Youth Groups across Australia was deemed impractical. It was great to have the support of Fr Giancarlo, Fr Harry and Fr Kevin at the Year 11 Retreat to guide and support the young men involved.
The announcement of the new Principal commencing in 2022 was made on Wednesday. The transition of College Leadership with regard to Positions of Leadership; the installation of the School Advisory Council including the election of a new Chair, Dr Eugene Fredericks; the appointment of Fr Harry Dyer OMI as College Rector, and now the appointment of Dr Paul Shannon as Principal, completes the succession planning instigated by the appointment of Fr Christian Fini OMI at the end of 2018. The planning didn’t include a worldwide pandemic but our schedule has been met nonetheless. I have no doubt there will be several opportunities for us to meet Dr Shannon in the upcoming months to facilitate our succession planning and his transition to his new role.
I would like to wish our students a restful and enjoyable holiday.
Yours sincerely,
Mr Tony Coghlan
Principal
