Science

It is exciting to begin a new year of schooling and to anticipate the discoveries that will be made in Science and Technology in 2019 and the decades to follow.

In the spirit of curiosity and discovery, the Year 7s have begun the year exploring how to blow giant bubbles and even produce bubbles inside bubbles!

As a Science faculty, we are excited to welcome four Year 12 Leaders of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) to work across these learning areas to promote STEM at Kilbreda. Our STEM leaders for this year are:

  • Madison Carty
  • Emma Chamberlain
  • Ebony Willis
  • Jasmine Winter

We are grateful to these girls for applying for this position and look forward to working together.

The Periodic Table

2019 marks the 150th anniversary of the formation of the Periodic Table of the elements by the Russian scientist, Dimitri Mendeleev, in 1869. In appreciation of the beauty and influence of this organisation of all of the matter around us, the United Nations General Assembly announced 2019 as the International Year of the Periodic Table of the Elements (IYPT). To hear the names and some properties of the updated 118 elements of the Periodic Table, have a listen to the ASAP Science Periodic Table Song  HERE.

Celebrations of the Periodic Table in all its glory have begun around the world. The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry has launched a year long, online Periodic Table Competition. Its organisers hope to reach 1 million participants from over 100 countries. You could be one of these participants- and even win a Periodic Table signed by a Nobel Prize winning chemist! To enter the challenge, see HERE

There are numerous other competitions to enter, from creating a video of the Periodic Table, a mosaic of Dimitri Mendeleev, nominating a young scientist of note, writing stories about the Periodic Table or even joining the international team attempting to crochet the Periodic Table!

Please explore the IYPT website HERE for all details and hope your table is as rich and abundant as the elements around us in 2019!
