Brigidine Celebration Day Address

Would it be a strange thing to say that in the world we live in today how lucky we are. Might be. But I will say it. I am very lucky and fortunate. I am fortunate to be a member of this community. A community whose tradition and story goes back nearly 1500 years. I am lucky to get to see that the story continues to grow through you, even in hard times.

St Brigid, Daniel Delany, and the Brigidines did it tough.

St Brigid said:

“It is a virtue and a prize to listen patiently to, and put up with insults for the sake of God.”

Would you give away your father’s prized possession so a poor person would live on? Brigid did.

Would you travel around the world to a new land to set up communities of service? The Brigidines did.

Whether in education and service, the Brigidines have continued to forge a new path. Now they look to you and I to keep the lamp burning and the water of life flowing.

When we talk about life and where we are today what do we think of? In the movie Dead Poets Society life is spoken about as a play, as a drama. There is one line in the movie that goes like this:

"That you are here — that life exists, that the powerful play goes on and you may contribute a verse. What will your verse be?"

I believe that you should be proud of the verse that you are adding to our school’s life journey. You have all contributed something over this year and no matter how large or small that might be take the time to celebrate.

St Brigid said it best so I share her words with you.

"I would like an abundance of peace. I would like full vessels of charity. I would like rich treasures of mercy. I would like cheerfulness to preside over all."

Peace, charity, mercy and cheerfulness. I hope that works for you. That’s what I wish for you.

Thank you to all those who have had a part in organising Brigidine Celebration Day especially, the Senior Student Leaders, Mr. McInerney, Ms. Williams and the Year Level Leaders.

Take care and have a great day.
