Year 5/6—Celebrating Learning

Maths - Dream Home Designs

As part of a unit on Measurement and Geometry, students were asked to design their dream home given a plot of land 504 square meters. They needed to include a certain number of rooms and garden space. The rest was their design. Students were required to calculate the perimeters, areas and volumes of certain spaces using known formulae.

They have experimented with a number of different text types and focused on topics and areas of their own interest and imagination.

Integrated

Our Integrated unit this term focused on the Design Process. Students were required to design an object that would help protect an egg and keep it intact after it was dropped from a height of 3m.

A Poem on the Climate Emergency

By Liv 5/6A

Denial

Now our climate is ever changing,

our weather always rearranging.

But many still turn a blind eye,

deciding just to never try.

For with knowledge comes guilt,

and with that self doubt,

Things that nobody wants to know about.

So why don't we all say " UNTRUE!"

instead of having to feel blue.

they say "Nothing of this  "climate change" is something we want to see!"

As for many, it's far more important,  to see whats on TV.

Gardening

As part of Gardening in Term 3 students were required to create a nature journal. Here is a brilliant example by Lief 5/6A

Sucked Into Minecraft

By Ryder 5/6A

Issue 1

Chapter 1 how it happened

“Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh” I screamed as I plummeted from the blocky hill into the lake. I looked up, the pillerges started down the hill, I got out of the lake and jumped onto the beach. I look around, if there is one thing i’ve learned over my years of gaming always check your surroundings in every game i've ever played it always works.

you're probably wondering what's happening, let me go right back to the start.

I love minecraft, well who doesn't. well to be honest i’m the only one in my class who likes minecraft so I get teased a lot.

One day I went out to the shop with my mum.when I was walking something caught my sight. I saw the dark purple glow of the ender dragon egg. I had to have it so I ran over and grabbed it, went over to mum and asked if I could get it.

She said yes.

So I got home and put it on my shelf then went and played minecraft. When I pressed on my world it said

“gO Get YoUr EgG” so I did then it said “RuB iT” so I did. Then suddenly I turned it into a small pile of sand. Soon I raised up into the air. And got sucked into the t.v. Then I was a block of sand then everything went dark.

Chapter 2 blockey world

I heard a pop sound and suddenly I could walk around. I had a look around there was a chest full of stuff “oh no

I'm not at home anymore I'm inside MINECRAFT '' I calm myself down, finally I go over to a tree and start punching it. I've now got wood so I craft some wood planks then a crafting table. I climb into a mountain and I look around a village. I start to run over to the village

THE FORGOTTEN TEACUP

By Evan 5/6S

I've always loved living in the country with Amanda. I feel safe in our little cottage. I always think back to happy times, like when she bought me in the op-shop, the first time she took a sip of tea from me, and all the wonderful picnics we’ve had. But I’m feeling a bit down about one thing. I’ve heard Amanda talking on the phone about us moving to the city. I really like the country, and feel really safe here. But I guess I’m looking forward to exploring a new place. From what I've heard, I think we’re moving away tomorrow. I’m so nervous, I think I won’t get any sleep tonight.

I got no sleep last night. Like I thought. Today is the day we move to the city. Honestly, I’m feeling nervous. I can see the moving van. I also see people loading some of Amanda’s things on board. I see her coming near me. I think she's coming to put me in the van. Ok; let's do this; I’m ready. Here she  comes. Wait. She picked up her phone instead. Now she's leaving! She’s forgotten me! After all these years?! Why?! Was it on purpose?!

It’s been about an hour now; I'm getting really worried. I can see a car pulling up. Someone gets out. Someone who is not Amanda. My heart sinks.  But now I can see another car, with someone else getting out. Someone who is Amanda. She pushes past the other person, and rushes through the door. She picks me up, and runs back to her car. She hasn’t forgotten me!

After a long drive, we finally arrived at our new house in the city. The house isn’t too bad; but it’s a bit noisy. Amanda pours some tea into me, and turns on the T.V. She takes a few  sips out of me, as we watch a romantic comedy. I am looking forward to what lies ahead, in our new lives, in the city. I just know that there are many happy memories ahead.
